I found an 8 year old article that said use scots nature scape chips from home depot. My home depot didn't have that. It had a dark mulch that might be right, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, what can I use for chips to grow my own little patch?

Well... I took matters in my own hands and swept up chips from my woodpile. Fir, alder, maybe a little maple and walnut. Dug out a strip, put open corrugated cardboard down, put the cold wet woodchips on top, sprinkled the mycelia all around and covered it. Will see what happens.

Those will work great. Myself, I've had problems with in-ground beds so far but people have success with them. That chip variety is fine though. Good luck!

I have used aged, outdoor-stored pine chips for my Ps cyans. Bought them from a local plant nursery.
If you can find any sort of hardwood BBQ smoking chips (Alder, Apple, Cherry), those work great. If u do thou, u have to process them/age them so that the mycelium can eat thru them easily.
One way to age them is putting them outside for month(s) and letting nature age them naturally. I believe boiling the chips for several hours is another method as well.

Craigslisp often has mulch for free or cheap. Find some cherry if you can. Tree service companies and utilities will often bring you mixed hardwood chips as well for cheap or free. Some places have community mulch piles where people and companies dump trees that get shredded and other green waste. Locally here they shred a lot of hardwood and a lot of honeysuckle. The honeysuckle colonizes incredibly fast but doesn't fruit much like the hickory and maples do. Mixed hardwood works well. Maple, apple, hazel, poplar, willow, cottonwood, hickory (very unlikely in Oly) oak, fir, hemlock, spruce, etc all work well. Alder is great but those guys will eat nearly anything. Palate wood, roof shingles, cardboard, bamboo, wine corks, telephone poles. There is a patch in Seattle that has been there for many many years and sustains it's self on small pine cones that get buried under grass which fall from a row of trees. All kinds of shit.
Hardwood fuel pellets are cheap.
