following Magash's tek- rye question

Hi, a foaf is following Magash's tek (thanks Magash!) except with 1/2 pint jars due to the size of her pc. The rye soaked brobably 30 hrs and got a teeny bit fermented. FOAF then simmered as directed. Looks good and foaf tasted the cooked rye, tasted good but could taste the fermentation a little. Will this affect anything? FOAF is pc'ing the 1/2 pints now. Also, will these work as cakes instead of casings since she is a first timer and doesn't want to complicate things too much? Thank you!

No.

Yields will be very poor due to the low water content of the rye. Case it...

Hmmm....I've soaked for 30 hrs before but never noticed if I fermented them or not. Guess it don't matter cause I've never had a problem.
Myself I'd case the rye.

Right on. Thank you for your help, Atwar. Now I just have to figure out what to case with. Off to do lots of reading.

75% coir 25% verm seems to work ok.

Wow! I don't think i've seen it done in reusable containers like that! Do you have a little greenhouse with a humidifier or something? Do you have more info on your casing method somewhere? Thanks for any info.

I use this thing.
Now I know that everybody says not to use clear containers. Bullshit Now the reason I use them and cover them with foil is this. Should I for some reason feel that a casing may be contamed I can take it out of the foil and look. That saves major time and can stop the contam at that one casing instead of waiting for the contam to come to the surface and spread spores around the chamber.
The way I do the casing layer is 75%coir 25%verm. I soak the verm in a jar like grains then strain it so it's at max moisture. I add 4 quarts of water to each coir brick. (sometimes 4 1/2). Load it into jars (qt) and pc for 2 hrs. (coir can really hide contams). Let it cool and just use it out of the jar.

Are you completely sterilising your casing materials?

You can put it on both, but a bottom layer is usually unnecessary. A bottom layer is used for the purpose of adding additional water, and absorbing metabolites that the grain exudes during the growing process. Some think it is important, others say it is not. In all actuality, it doesn't hurt, and can be potentially advantageous.
