Ya thats why I do them sometimes.I go through cycles of grain sometimes, then cakes for a while. They are just alot less hassle to prepare IMO.A
And ya Homeground BRF rocks,as does ground WBS and ground Millet.

well I do alot of things just to try them out.WBS flour is not something I do on a regular basis, but figured id try after seeing a post that Anno made a while back.Same with the Millet flour.
As far as the 4 innoc points,I did it under my flowhood so not really a big pain for me.

Started my straw log project today.I used ground PF cakes as spawn instead of grain spawn.I like PF cakes for spawn better actually than grain.Especially if you grind them in a blender.Nice even and fast.

Thanks for all your responses, but I still have questions:

has anyone used jars or glasses smaller than half pint, such as quarter pint or even double shot glass measuring about 3 ounces? How was the growth and yield of such small glasses and why dont more people use smaller than half pint glasses

the approx. loss in yield(max) should be proportional to the decrease in substrate.  The amount of time to colonise cannot be as easily judged.  Less than the larger jars is probably the safest response.

I think you are missing a very important point though.  In this hobby you move forward.  Think: "how can I get more substrate colonised just as quickly".  To this the answer is usually whole grain in larger jars.

I experience 40-60 wet grams in my 3 ounce double shot glasses but only about 50% more yields for my half pint glasses which I find quite strange. Maybe shrooms dont care about volume, just surface area? the half pints have 3x the volume but only about 50% more surface area? could be why casing is so effecient. This method really needs to be tried oneday. would nature produce better yields just from the increase in surface area?

How do you cover a shot glass? Curious concept if I could find a small jar such as a baby food jar, but the plastic inside melts on the lid when I pc and they are hard to find replacement lids for. Just curious about your idea.

I have posted a few times on exaclty that subject. I am pretty sure that there is an optimum ratio of surface area / substrate volume (holding all other things equal). Other factors are also involved, such as type of substrate and strain.

If cakes are used, I think you will find a linear relationship between substrate volume and yield (over the life of the cake) regardless of surface area. But, with more surface area, you will approach the potential with fewer flushes.

Hey domey, I mean bud, my PINTS are PINTS and I am not a retard I can read it says PINT on the box of jars, came through 11/12. Just check what every other person says. If you cant get yours to colonize then I'm sorry but just because yours dont doesnt mean other peoples dont. Dont call somebody a liar because your projects are unsuccessful.

thats the strange thing, I get much better yields on smaller glasses. Right now nature's experment is underway. a half pint cake and 4 of them measuring almost 3 ounces, a third the size of the half pint cake. Id like to see the half pint cake get me even double the yields of the mini cakes

Jesus christ... I think if I had raised the temp 3 more degrees to 86 my jars would already be fully colonized.
