Identifying contams by smell

A little confusion here. I have read a lot about using smell as a means of checking for contams: sour, sweet, sickly, rotten, etc. But I have also read not to open contaminated jars in the house due to health risks and spreading mold and/or bacteria.
If your plates or spawn or bins look good, and I use smell as a final test, is it unhealthy or dangerous to do so? Should it not be done in the house? It just seems like conflicting advice. Clarity would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You may be over thinking things... If something looks like mold or bacteria, don't put it up to your nose and take a huge whiff... haha
If you have a jar that you can distinctly smell when you're handling it. and it doesn't smell like mushrooms, there's no need to try any further. Plates are even more obvious so you don't need to do any smelling there.
Take outside, open, dump in trash, carry jar back inside and wash as you would any dish. No need for a hazmat suit.

Huge whiff... there shall be no snorting of fungus!
I know most all contams will be obvious by looking, but just wanted to get clarity on the safety of smelling potentially unhealthy growth that isn't so easy to see. Thanks!

In my extremely limited experience, the sniff test is one of the best (and quickest) ways to detect contamination. If your sterile technique is incompetent, you will often smell the rot before you see anything. Inadequate pressure cooking and too much liquid will cause a vinegary, acidic odor - as will other bacteria.
In general, it should smell like the medium you used. Earthy if BRF, grassy if oats, grainy if seed, etc. Mycellium smells earthy, mushroomy (surprise), and almost like dirt - bland and "naturalistic." It should be subtle and not penetrating. If you smell ANYTHING that is powerful, penetrating, sweet, or acidic, its usually an ill omen. As Pearl stated, you shouldn't be able to smell anything if you are near it. Typically, with a healthy jar, youll need to jam your nose right up to the hole and huff it to catch a scent.
Naturally, peeling back filters/micropore tape to sniff it constantly will probably do more harm than good.

Its not unsafe to use the "sniff method" unless its black mold, which rarely comes up in cultivation.
Typically, bacterial infections have a sour smell, trich molds are well moldy-smelling. Fresh mushroom mycelium has a inviting sweet-earthy smell which smells really nice
If u have a suspected jar, its best to open it outside to prevent mold spores from being released into the air inside your grow space. I wouldnt worry too much about their toxicity, they will make you sick if you ingest them but typically molds are not toxic/dangerous (with the exception of the rare black mold).
But with research into say this thread, you can easily learn to ID different infections without needing the sniff method to ID them.
Hope this helps
