Getting some gear together for some mycology experiments.
Goals are to grow edibles, medicinals and perhaps bring some sub terraneus species to fruit.
- 120g instant potato from Tescos, 24p
- agar agar 100g from Ebay, about £3-£4
- gypsum from the ebay, didn't want a huge bag from the garden supplies.
- ground coffee from Lidl
- strong foil and cling film from Lidl
- crunchy peanut butter from Lidl, about 400g size jar, PP5 lids, I'm determined to make this jar work, needs a gasket, might try some silicone and/or tyvek, tried rubber gaskets made for preserving jars but they were too thick.

- 6 x 350g kilner jars
- 6 litre hi-dome PC prestige.
- 10 x steriplan duran glass petris from amazon, the soda-lime ones, seem to hold up in PC so far, its only sudden thermo shock they dont like.
- rye grain from wholefoodsdirect, might try sourcing whole oats from a local supply next time.
- 80 Litre SAB from asda £7, saw them in Tesco £6.75
- e-cig wire .4 gauge, perfect for inoculation loops, sturdy.
- scalpel handle with #11 blades
Things needed
- good flame steriliser, tried methylated spirits in the trangia, gets the inoculation loop red hot, but only the tip of the scalpel.
Lighters are rubbish. Might try making an alcohol lamp with the meths. Dont really want to spend mega bucks on a butane torch, and the cheap ones on amazon look like toys... Hmm, might have to bite the bullet on this one, would be good if I could use it one handed for use in the SAB
- mini monotub, going to try about 15L to 20L size.
- coco coir, thinking pets at home, £3 for a 650g block, 2nd half price, probably works out the same as buying bulk on line.
- nitrile gloves, currently pilfer these from work, but should get my own.

Currently I'm trying to dial in my agar game with the glass petris.
What does everyone use for flame sterilisation? butane torch is probably the way to go, any recommendations?

Mycology is the branch of biology concerned with the study of fungi, including their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy and their use to humans as a source for tinder, traditional medicine, food, and entheogens, as well as their dangers, such as toxicity or infection.
Everything you wrote under that isn't relevant.
As a mushroom cultivator you are at least thinking it through......

I use the same butane torch I use for plumbing, rothenburger but its expensive, screwfix do a small one for cooks but it's a bit expensive ~ £35, you can find a small butane torch with gas on ebay for less than a tenner

Hey, thanks for that, I'll mybe get a brass propane pencil torch, they're about £15 plus a few quid for a small cylinder.
Tried making an alcohol lamp last night with some meths, works ok but the scalpel still doesn't get roasty toasty.
Was just watching a popular UK youtuber wiping the scalpel with iso before use, and folks seems to use bics for years with no problems. I dunno, guess I'm too lazy to clean the dry damp off the walls.

Anyone know where to get a decent pressure cooker? Don't want to spend a fortune. Using a 9L 12 psi presto at the moment.
Is getting imported from the States the only option for something decent?
Cheers

Using PDA, topop agar 100g from ebay, boil up a spud 30mins, filter using kitchen roll, dilute it 1/2 then add a little bit of honey (going to try demerara or raw cane sugar)
would try LME but cant seem to find a cheap small quantity.

Thanks man. Where do you get your pda from? I'm using spray light malt extract from a home brew store. You used to be able to get it from wilko. 4.50 for a bag

there's a 20L 'Royal Swiss' listed on FB Marketplace in Mitcham for £80, in the pics there's also a 30L mite be worth enquiring since they seem to have a few, maybe they'd post <shrug> "20L PRESSURE COOKER - BRAND NEW"
There's a 23L Presto with a gauge listed in Brighton, but they want £275 for it, think you can import one for less
I use a 6L 15psi high top Presto I got on there for £12 can only fit 3x1L jars in tho, looking to upgrade but I'm not made of money
