Making good LC lids - where to get parts cheaply * 2
    #26800867 - 07/03/20 07:02 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I've been asked before how to make a filter lid for LCs that do not leak and work perfectly for mushroom growing.  Below is a picture of the lid, and here are the exact components I recommend:

Plastic Wide-mouth canning jar lids with sealing silicone gaskets (updated this after I tried these and compared them to the others)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083GV6LS8

Vacutainers (BD 366430) with red septums which are about ten times as good as the grey stoppers (note this price is INSANELY low and I just found it today.  I've had friends buy these at $50 for 100-count)
https://www.walmartpetrx.com/p-5289-bd-vacutainer-serum-blood-collection-tubes-10-ml-16-x-100-mm-100-pk.aspx

22um, PTFE (hydrophobic), 32mm syringe filters (at 50 for $20 this is the best deal I've seen)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/32mm-PTFE-Syringe-Filter-0-22um-Pore-Size-Non-sterile-10-1000-pieces/153574497916

Hope that helps!

Edited: changed gasket link to the type I use/recommend.

Another option for the gasket and lids combined: you can get the gasket and lid together here for less than either alone, but I don't know this brand personally (the others I do):
https://www.amazon.com/Aozita-Plastic-REGULAR-Mouth-Silicone/dp/B07T1G3MNK/

Price per lid with option 1: $2.21
Price per lid with option 2: $1.18

With proper lids like this, do you just shake the crap out of the jar to break up the mycelium or would you still need to aspirate it some other way? (i.e. glass shards, air from a syringe, blender, etc.)

Pardon my ignorance, I've just recently started with agar and even more recently considered LC.

I continuously stir with a home-brew, cheap stir plate and Teflon-coated magnet (a topic for another post probably) at around 100 to 200 RPM.  However, that is definitely not necessary, and yes, with a proper lid like this, you just shake the hell out of it rather than swish around a marble or whatever.  You can draw the LC with the jar totally inverted or on its side too because lids like these do not leak - not through the threads of the jar and not through the hydrophobic filter disc either (which repels liquid).

One other comment I should have added above: sometimes the syringe filter discs do clog after repeated use.  I don't know exactly how or why, but it does happen.  Before I put anything in the pressure cooker, I test the filter disc by blowing air with my lips through it.  Air should pass through with some resistance.  If there is no resistance or if it's totally clogged, just replace the filter disc with a new one.

I like these gaskets much better than the ones I used above:

I updated the silicone seals link above because I tried these and they are much better.  These are cheaper and they stick in the lid, which is better for a LC lid.  I've tried them both, and these are MUCH better and a third the price.

Do your syringe filters come apart after pressure cooking?

sometimes the rtv silicone pop or come off my metal lids.

I didn't run a ton, but the bigger filter syringes stay stuck on lid with rtv but i prefer the small filters.  If i'm running 8 lc lids through pc i usually get two syringe filters which don't seal.

If you are using the metal lids you need to use RTV silicone on them, not just to make sure they don't pop out during the pressure changes of the pressure cooker but also to make sure they are sealing.

In the case of a plastic lid, I have used them with and without glues (and I tried a host of glues).  In the end, though, I did not find that glue mattered.  If the hole is precisely sized and drilled, then there is enough plastic-to-filter contact between the lid and filter that it seals plenty well and does not allow the filter to pop out even without glue

So when that happens--and it WILL happen on eBay since eBay is a moving place--you click on the other items the seller has to offer.  I couldn't find the 0.22um PTFE ones and the 0.22um nylon ones will be hydrophilic (draw water in them).  I would ask him for the exact ones or just go with the 0.45um PTFE ones.  0.45um is a slightly larger pore size, but I know some mushroom farms are using the 0.45um ones.  In fact, I've used 0.5um filter patch bags without any problem before, so I could almost swear they will work as well (if not a little better) as the 0.22um-pore-sized ones.

If you don't mind direct from China (it'll take longer) they got some 100 packs of the 25mm 0.22um PTFE ones for 36 cents each:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/100pcs-PTFE-Syringe-Filters-25mm-0-22um-non-sterilized/254276654725

Again, here are the qualities you want:

1) 25mm or greater in diameter
2) 0.22um pore size (preferably) or 0.45um (probably still fine)
3) PTFE hydrophobic filter material (I cannot vouch for other materials)
4) Polypropylene housing or some housing that can hold up to pressure cooking (I think they are always polypropylene though)

Prices vary wildly but a good deal is less than 50 cents each delivered to your front door

Good luck!

A Good LC lid is the OEM lid :P If you refrigerate it when the LC becomes closer to or clear, the metabolism of the mycelium is greatly diminished and won't require much maintenance completely sealed. Those lids do come in handy tho, especially after years of use the original lids begin to rust and for long term storage you want to allow for some aspiration.

Do they leak?  No.  If they did, they wouldn't be seals.  They do not leak.

Yes, that is correct.  You must purchase the correct type of filters for that to work.  You want hydrophobic ones used to filter gasses.  Water that touches them simply beads up and will not penetrate them easily.  If you buy the hydrophilic ones, they will get wet as they should and are used to filter liquids.  I also mention this in the kind of filter discs to buy (and there are a lot of types).

So I must ask seller if these are in fact hydrophobic or did you already buy these?

The material the filter is made from determines its response to liquids.  As mentioned in the original post, the recommended PTFE filter material is hydrophobic.  Again, these will work fine:
