Does substrate depth matter? 1

I'm planning on doing a couple shoeboxes, and I read and heard somewhere that substrate depths need to be between 2 and 4 inches for biological efficiency. However, I'm more concerned about following the proper ratios, spawn to sub will be between 1:1 and 1:2 if at most, so if I don't get these substrate depths is that something to be worried about? Does substrate depth correlate with results? Having a 2-4 inch substrate depth in a shoebox doesn't really leave a whole lot of growing room, and I won't be dub tubbing or anything like that, just a plain old unmodified shoebox.

I think that the deeper the tub, the harder it is to colonize, but the more flushes you get out of it. How confident are you in your sterile procedure? I find it quicker and easier to colonize shallower tubs and since less stuff is used on a shallow tub, you can make more tubs.

Thicker is also more of an environmental buffer, in that it won't dry out as fast and temp swings not as bad depending on your temps. As with most things, somewhere in the middle is best.

My trays that are 5 inches deep produce much larger and thicker mushrooms than trays I've done at 2 inches deep

Wondered about that myself. I have trays of between 2-3 inches lower layer 2x the middle and top. I am going to give that a try next time and go deeper.

I always use one quart and I’ve had subs an inch and five inches. Never noticed a difference besides colonization speed. And I guess deeper subs stayed hydrated better through the second flush cuz I don’t really dunk my subs either.
Don’t worry about ratios and stuff, shoeboxes aren’t big enough to cause problems no matter what. I’ve run half a quart with the shoebox filled 80% up and it was fine.

Good on you for actually reading the post. I didn't even know we were talking about shoeboxes.

I fill my shoeboxes about a half inch from the top. IME it produces bigger fruits probably because a thicker sub holds more water content.

No way, that's way too much, I'm not going to be dub tubbing or anything. I still need space to grow in the shoebox lol.

check out Bod's easy AF shoebox tek, his solution is using a plastic grocery bag over the SB with some holes in it. seems like a legit answer to the question.

It is. Did a PE grow with that Tek and it worked great. Doing some GTs and chitwans right now and decided to dub tub. Turned out to be a bad idea cuz it's very dry where I live and they got a bit too much fae. Misted them an now I got small fruits so back too the bags. Kind off a waste of a good shoebox anyway lol
