World’s Biggest BRF Cake? 3

Made a large BRF cake that I’m planning to inoculating with liquid culture. Pint jar for reference.
8 cups of vermiculite 4 cups of BRF 4 Cups of water
I have a 10 inch long needle that should get the LC to the edges of the jar.
How much LC do you guys think I should use? I should be able to get a pretty thick LC by putting the long needle directly into the mycelium pile at the bottom of the LC.

I've been told by experts on here that less is more - you don't need much spore liquid for it to take. The most common is 1cc per jar, some recommend using more for larger jars. I'm not sure how experienced you are, but that BRF jar looks strange. I don't see a dry verm. layer on top, but I guess its not necessary with gas exchange filters.
Definitely an unorthodox jar. I'm not experienced enough to give advise, but if it was my jar, I'd put 1cc/ml total.

I’m going to inoculate with a very dense LC and hope that works out. If not, I have some grains that are colonizing too. This isn’t my only experiment I have going right now.

It’s a storage jar that is rated to 400F. You can put it in the oven. I picked that jar because it has a wide mouth and I can get the cake out when it’s time to dunk and roll.
I didn’t put a dry vermouth layer because it has the filter disc in place. I’ll keep everyone posted On the progress of this experiment.

It looks pretty fancy, but probably too big to fit in anything but the larger pressure cookers. Its neat that you can put it in the oven. But honestly, I'm not sure if that will sterilize it. I've been advised on here that PC/boiling water sterilizes by steam, one person called it fractional sterilization.
I've never seen a tek that uses oven sterilizing, but there is a first for everything. Hopefully you have a big enough pot for that monster. Good luck! The largest I've tried is 16oz/1 pint jar, and I was advised on here to always use more smaller jars vs less larger ones. If something goes wrong, you lose the whole thing. An anomaly/error on smaller jars will kill one jar of many. One guy explained that it was like a "race" between the mycellium and other potential competing bacteria/contaminations. The longer it takes to colonize, the higher the chance it will die from contams.
In my experience using more spore liquid results in faster colonization (but its tricky to avoid too much moisture), so you might want to use extra and hope it will outpace anything else that could be in there. If it turns out oven sterilization works, that could be a big breakthrough in lowering the threshold for equipment needed to cultivate.

Large BRF jars do not do well. The colonization is super slow and your chance of contamination is greater. I tried pint and a half jars with Brf a long time ago and it was a disaster.
If you want to go big... just start doing grains and monotubs/minimonos

I have grains going too. I’m just messing around with different TEK.
Anyway, I ordered 10 inch long needles from Amazon and they sent me a pair of women’s socks ffs.

I would be concerned about the middle reaching temp in an oven as well. At 15psi, I would want to PC it for 4 hours - with just dry heat, it might take excessively long to reach temp in the middle.
I don't think colonization will be slow if he's using a decent LC (like the OP is doing). He'll be innoculating them through the SHIPs, so contam vectors are actually probably lower than standard PFTek. The SHIPs seal up as soon as you pull the syringe out vs. covering the hole after the inoculation...
Onward with the science! Lets see how it turns out.

I would use as much LC as possible, try and get it to run to the bottom of the jar if possible. You are going to be fighting time and gravity on this one so you need to get the bottom colonized ASAP or the whole thing will likely be compacted in a week.

I'd say which ever amount of LC you chose to inject make sure to spread it around as much as you can. Try to shower as much of the BRF mix as you can, when I do cakes I start injecting as the needle is tilted 45degrees in one direction along the glass and I inject continuously as I swipe the needle all the way to the opposite side 45degree angle (hope that makes sense).

Yeah 4 tiny specs of inoculation in a BRF substrate of that size will undoubtedly not colonize properly at all. But then again I personally don't feel that a BRF/Verm mix is optimal terrain for colonizing myc. I've rarely been able to get 1/2 pint BRF cakes to colonize in under a month with LI and LC. But 2 parts hydrated coir and 1 part oatmeal is so far the best/fastest (most airy) substrate I've made. This is 9 day colonization using 5ml of LC.

I inoculated it with 60cc of very concentrated LC and a 10 inch blunt tip needle. I was able to get all the way to the bottom of the jar and injected LC at the very bottom and slowly as I pulled the needle out of each injection port.
It is now in my incubator at 78° F.

I’m curious if the standard 24h dunk will be sufficient. You have a SGFC tall enough for this? 😁😁

Man I am hoping this works....
Usually small cakes are recommended for BRF, and that's for several reasons, but some of that's is because you are fighting several things that seem like aren't the case here...
1. Spores vs LC - spore solution is bacterial gross and also takes time for spores to germinate, as opposed to a clean, healthy LC that sucked up a bunch of nutes already. I mean, the colonization in the photos speaks for itself.
2. PC vs steam - most people doing BRF are using steam to "sterilize", this one is PC'd.
I hope you update whether this is success or fail.

Yeah, lots of people told me that penis envy wouldn’t grow on BRF but it did. I just found one of my APE agar plates growing pins. I put the plate in a shoe box to see how big the fruits will get. This hobby is so much fun and I’m learning tons from everyone but also from trying things out for myself.

I didn’t see many comments that it wouldn’t work. I saw a few suggestions on how to help ensure it works but no flat out statements that it’s a guaranteed fail. Would appreciate some quotes or something cause I gotta say, it’s pretty annoying when I read a lot of positive comments and someone comes in bleating about haters. Victim mentality is a disease.
I personally am excited for this, I’ve contemplated similar projects in the past but never got around to em.

Becoming Nobody was great but I highly recommend the short film (about 30 mins long)
Ram Dass, Going Home
I watched it on Netflix (don't know if they still have it) shortly before he died. It changed me quite a bit.

Damn I didn’t know Ram Dass was gay. It really don’t matter to me for his teaching. I’m just surprised but I was getting those vibes. What part of the forum index can I start a thread about these guys. I don’t wanna hijack this thread but I’m interested in talking about these spiritual psycho naughts.

or, honestly, in The Psychedelic Experience as, to some degree, they are and/or were at some point in their lives, heavily influenced by psychedelics.

Penis Envy can definitely grow on BRF. All cubenis strains grow on grains like Brown Rice, WBS, wheat, rye, etc. Its just that PE doesnt grow well on cakes which contain BRF of course.
Fahtster did a grow recently of PE on cakes. The only modification was a really thick verm layer during the cake-roll.

I actually soak that top thick layer of verm I til it drips down the side of the cake and the cake absorbs it slowly via gravity

Thanks for the info. Someone mentioned using a 5 gallon bucket with an inch of water that the bottom. Would it be ok to put the cake directly into water? Or would a mister or fogger be more appropriate? Your thoughts on hydrating this thing.

I’d just treat it like a regular pf cake and dunk it, DEC it and put it in an appropriate sized FC with perlite.. or maybe not DEC it so that you can flip it every 5 days or so.. the problem you’re going to have if you don’t is that all the water is going to end up in the bottom half with a sub that thick.. then either dunk it again after 10 days or so or DEC it at that point with a thick layer that you can soak. That’s the way I’d go about it but these are just educated guesses as to what will work.
PE pf cakes don’t require a peat casing like bulk subs for whatever reason

How much LC do you guys think I should use? I should be able to get a pretty thick LC by putting the long needle directly into the mycelium pile at the bottom of the LC.
OMG, 10 inches long!!?? What gauge?
If if were my jar, I'd spin that LC thoroughly and load a full syringe (my biggest ones are 30ml). Shoot 20ml of it in parallel tracks, bottom to top, near the middle of the jar, and then the rest along the glass so I can see it grow.
But warning: I'm on my 2nd LC grow (love it!!) and YMMV.

14 gauge, blunt tips. I’ll inoculate some more agar to make sure I didn’t contaminate my LC and if it’s clean, I’ll consider adding my LC to the top of the jar.

Was this LC from multispore, clone, or is this a strain you've expanded and grown out with success before?

Got a spore syringe from an online vendor, inoculated some agar then did agar to agar transfers and made a LC with the two plates that grew the fastest.

Hope that top colonizes fast, if it lags too far behind the bottom it will likely just consolidate while the bottom fires pins into a giant mess. This is a tightrope. Keep the updates coming.

Most impressed that of all variety you could have picked, you got APE to move as quickly as it (was/is) going. APE always likes to take it's sweet ass time for me, even with good LC

“Jar 1” and “Jar 2” refers to my LC jars. Jars Inoculated 1 day apart. Left is popcorn, right WBS.
The growth from Jar 2 is what I used in the BRF project. As you can by these two 1/2 gallon jars, the LC from Jar 2 grows at a much faster rate. I’ve already gotten a flush from my shoe boxes with the LC from jar two and the grains were inoculated on 10/22/2020. I have three 1/2 gallon jars that are ready to spawn to bulk with this stuff.

Impressed, on many levels!
The only time I've gotten ape to take to grains fast it happened to be popcorn too, btw. Curious if there's more to that.

That would be amazing if they didn’t stall out at any time. I gave up on pint size cakes after noccing up almost fifty of them over the summer... every one of them started out great and every one of them stalled up at some point... lot of dish washing. Sucked.

Idk but I don't think it's stalling out. Perhaps you're just not seeing the growth as its occurring within the center of the cake.

Honestly it should finish just fine if it made it this far. I'd wait another week before I assumed it was stalled. Either way that thing is going to require some consolidation. I'd wait a week and closely monitor it, and if by then it just doesn't do fuck all (I bet it will), give it another few days consolidation time and assume the top dried out, then slice the dry, unfinished shit off after you carefully birth it. Been a fun project to watch. Going to be fun seeing that thing blowing up with pins too...

Top is still moist. There was lots of condensation on the lid. The container seems to be air-tight.

That’s the way I’d go about it but these are just educated guesses as to what will work.

How long did you dunk it for? I imagine it would need quite a bit more time to soak than a half pint.

At 96RH in here, I don't think top fruiting would have given much benefit. Plus, if this thing does spit out a kilo size fruit or two, I would hate to see them smashed against the side of the glass. All the positive growth vibes I can muster are going to this cake!

This is the risk we all take when we engage in ridiculous projects. The trick is to figure out where it could have gone wrong and examine where we can do better.

Damn! That was a fun ride, sad it has to come to an end. But that doesn't mean we can't get back on for another go..... I love stuff like this. Not so much a "This is a great idea and everyone should do it" kinda thing but a "this is a unique idea and I want to see it done at least once" thing. Thanks for letting us tag along.

It’d be a waste to not try to salvage it. I’ve been lurking on this thread waiting for it to fruit I say cut off the contam part and move it away from any grows going on
Edit: Nevermind obviously I don’t know how to read newer posts LOL. Anyways thanks for the ride bud. Sad ending. Just gotta come back bigger and better
