Preserving Cultures
    #26995894 - 10/21/20 08:06 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I'm taking a break from growing actives and wanted to try my hand at growing some edibles.  I ordered 4 culture syringes from a Shroomery sponsor (Agaricus bitorquis, Ganoderma lucidum, Hericium erinaceus, Pleurotus jamor), but had a couple questions before I start squirting these out.

I've only ever dealt with spores from vendors before; are live culture syringes assumed to be clean and ready to put to grain, or should they be put to agar and cleaned up first?

As far as long term storage is concerned, my intent is to use the first bit of each syringe to inoculate some agar plates, then take wedges from the plates to create slants.  I'm assuming shooting the syringes right into the slants would be a bad idea due to the excess moisture this would introduce, but I don't like to create extra work for myself if I don't need to.  Is the agar dish a necessary intermediary step?

I'm also all ears if you've got any specific tips for growing any of those types of mushrooms; I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get started.
