ID Help - Chanterelles? (PNW)
    #26993854 - 10/20/20 12:07 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Have I finally found some Chanterelles in WA?

In another post I believe I found some false chanterelles. These are different. They were growing under Douglas fir, not gregariously, up to 3 per cluster.

Gills are firm, have a rubber texture, not foldable onto one another.

They are a bit dry and have a dull yellow color.

Spore print not done yet.

They do look like a Cantharellus Sp.
Possibly Cantharellus formosus.

Nice find! I love the smell of freshly harvested chanterelles!

These do have a unique smell, not just that generic mushroom smell. Reminds me of the smell of crushed seeds of peaches and apricots.

I went back to the same spot and picked a few more that I didn't see yesterday night:

Is there anything I need to confirm before eating these? They really don't look like Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca to me and the other lookalikes are even more different.

By the way, I can't seem to get this thing to sporulate on (dark) paper. Not sure if the one I was trying was still too young.

Those are good!

Definitely Cantharellus

The presence of Flase gills is probably one of the best indicators for differentiating Cantharellus from their lookalikes.
