Need to go to trade school or figure something out. Suggestions?
    #26992738 - 10/19/20 11:08 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So I need to move forward, and pave the way to a better career. I’ve been debating on going to trade school, or get into IT. I’m really in a tough spot not knowing what my next move should be. How does one figure that out?

I was debating on going to college but four years full time is a huge commitment, and I know a lot of people who just go into debt and wasted time doing that. What do you guys have to say?

Follow your passion, not money.

It took me half a lifetime and ending up in a career I despise to realise that.

I very much enjoyed it. However I won't be doing that again from the looks of things; I'm going to open an oldschool bodybuilders gym in the same part of the world instead. I can't wait.

The plan is all in place, I just need to make it a reality,

Also, beware IT OP. That's what I chose at eighteen and whilst I have risen to the upper echelons of the game and make big money; a more soulless, dispassionate job I have never known.

Honestly I have like no true passion for anything, as depressing as that sounds. I am a huge animal lover, but not sure what I can even do with that. I don’t even know where to start but I’ve been saying that for years, that’s why I’m trying to make somewhat of a plan and jump in.

One passion I have is providing for my family, and having money to be able to live a nice life. I’m 28 and while I get by, that’s not living and I don’t care for my job. I hate having to make money on the side. I just want to be a somewhat normal person with a solid career where I can advance.

The reason I mention IT is because I grew up with computers, know some people who are successful in it who are NOT straight brainiacs and I could POTENTIALLY use that skill/degree at my current job.

It's not so bad from others I hear from in the comp world (my older bro does cyber security and infrastructure for the government) I think maybe its who you do IT for that makes it soulless.  I mean my brother doesn't find it soulless more ...evil incarnate :rofl2:

To the OP, literally make a list of what your interests are, what do you browse on the computer, besides droogz forums, maybe you read sciencey articles that come out, or are active in car forums, then pick a field or trade from those that has good job prospects.  There are places on the web that not only give pay ranges for jobs, but projections for the need for that job in 5 years, 10 years etc.  It will always be easier getting a job in an expanding field, or a field where knowledgeable workers are shrinking (aging out/retiring but the youngsters don't want to fill those positions).

Just some general advice from a person who thinks of his job and goes "meh" don't hate nor love it, but I have many avenues of advancement that make it enticing.

Electrician is a good one, bit of a long road to get through journeyman status, but once you hit master electrician $$$$$ I have buddy that does that, he is 42 now, owns 4 cars and 2 houses outright.  Get's almost all work done on his houses as trades, he does electric work for a carpenter, they install new windows etc.

Along those lines HVAC can be pretty good too, but starts of crap.

I think my point is due to the fact that if one gets to the top of the IT game - working for the banks (as they provide the highest wages for this skillset, and wages is why we're in it) - then one will find it is soulless. Through personal experience and the experience of many close friends I am well aware of the culture inside a few dozen banks worldwide, and they're all pretty much the same in that regard.

If one sets out in IT not to get the most money and instead find job satisfaction, working for a young, hip startup or company that embodies a progressive attitude will likely have the element of soul that is missing at the upper end of the field.

Also; sitting on ones ass all day is an unavoidable aspect of the career and staring at a screen all day combined with that is never going to be great for the body and mind.

Just worth bearing in mind is all. If I did it all again I wouldn't choose IT.

I respect Jokeshopbeard's advice and respect him as a poster but I also could not disagree more. I would like to provide an alternative perspective.

I am in software in the US and I have a level of financial stability that I could not get in other fields. This stability has let me deal with my personal/childhood traumas more effectively. I am not bragging at all but the fact is that I have never said "I want to do XYZ but can't afford that". Thats valuable. my true passion is psych and phil. maybe economics. but those don't pay well

I've got one of those and it's really fucking not.

Once I hit forty, I wouldn't continue with this shite even if they offered me a million dollars.

Life is too short to spend most of your week doing something that drains the life from you, regardless of how much money you get.

There's more to life than money. I know that's not a popular opinion and it's certainly what they try to program us all with in our western cultural upbringing, but I say bollocks to it.

I Havnt even went to college or done any schooling. I feel dumb saying this but I don’t even know how to enroll and do all of that. I know one needs to apply for grants and stuff, which I also don’t know how to do but I guess it couldn’t be too hard to figure that out.

I mean how does one know what to even enroll in school for, you don’t even know if you’ll like what you’re enrolling for you know what I mean? Honestly I don’t want to do super hard labor for years and years. My dad did that growing up, a skilled carpenter, and it looked rough.

Some positions require general education and I guess you could learn a little about it yourself going through that. 4 years full time plus work would be ROUGH though, for me at least. There’s just so many different careers, I don’t understand how people decide.

I appreciate that. I wish I could see life out of other people’s eyes and understand their thoughts on the topic. I think I need to move too, start fresh and start a new adult life. I’m 28. I’ve been debating on the medical field but what if I don’t like it. I guess maby some people don’t necessarily live for what they do, and more about the money.

im 31 amd dont work, im on disability for mental issues, I think that runs out in Janurary and I dont know if Ill be approved for another 2 years, mainly cause my psychiatrist said im doing good and pawned me off to my family doctor for check ups

I have like 50% HS average, I think the teachers felt bad and gave me a passing grade, or if I want to put on the tin foil hat, the HS was passing students to make their stats look better, so I dont even think id qualify for most college courses

in 2016-2017 I tried learning python, but I could barly peice together spaghetti code, I did solve one real world problem though, I was volunteering at a nursing home running a shuffleboard game, and my "boss" (the recreational staff) was fidgeting with a excell sheet, she had entered like the hundreds of DVD tittles they had, and was looking at each one on IMDB and filling in the genre in the second collumn, I off handedly said, you could automate that, and she asks me if I could and my ego kind of got in the way and I said I could, so she emails me the spread sheet, at home I start looking up how to scrape the web in python, and quickly realized I was way in above my head, so I searched for programs if somebody else had already done it, and I found quite a extensive program called IMBDpy which could scrape the genres for me, so now I just needed to figure out how to get the data from the spread sheet, into python and back into the spread sheet, that lead me to a thing called comma seperated values or CSV, it took me like an hour to get a grasp on that and I was able to complete the task, using CSV I got the movie titles into python, rand IMDBpy and turned the data back into CSV and back into a spread sheet, took me a few hours to fill in the genre for hundreds of movies

sometimes I think I should get back into python, it was kinda fun, but I forget everything I know, I dont even remember how to print hello world, but it would be a good side gig, get a job flipping burgers during the day, and code at night

Get a decent certificate in whatever interests you - web, database, front end, or a specific language. See where that gets you and consider things further.

The advice to follow your interests or passion is the best advice. You can split the difference and do something you find to be a positive thing and that slightly interests you but which you know can help you make money. Just take two classes if you feel you need to go to school.

Animals? We need a political party that puts animal welfare and environment on par with human welfare as a priority. That mission will take web work. Not sure what country you are in, but that mission is critically needed the world over

You might want to check your state's employment stats, but in some areas web design is pretty lucrative. You need to know how to code, but also have an eye for aesthetics.

Even just managing site content and back end operations can be lucrative, and you likely don't even really know how to code. I used to get $500 a month to do so, and I'd run five our six sites at a time. I did this while being a full time student. It's an easy gig if you don't mind being on call basically all of the time. The work isn't stressful and it's a nice gig because of that.

If you decide to do IT focus on something like security and compliance as those jobs can usually only be filled by US citizens. Data science and data analytics is another area less under threat by h1b and outsourcing, but your math skills need to be on point.

To JSB's point about soullessness it really depends on what you do in IT, working in the analytics space exercises one's mind and can provide a creative outlet in the form of data visualization that is rewarding and fun, imho.

Trades are going to blow up as the boomers continue to retire, the only concern is a potential slump. But if you get good at something you will be in demand. I know a guy, dumb as a bag of hammers, but apparently an expert painter with skills and certifications in applying advanced coatings that keep him working making six figures. Last I saw him he was working at MIT applying specialized coatings for new lab space.

:nursemaryjane:
It's just NURSING!

History

While the current structure of the medical field, including nursing care, does not directly translate to historical provision of care, there is a history of male presence in caring for the sick and infirmed. The term nosocomial originates from the latin nosocomi, the name given to male caregivers, meaning that men were prominent in Ancient Rome.[5] Years later, during the plagues that swept through Europe, male nurses were also the primary caregivers. In the 3rd century, men in the Parabolani created a hospital and provided nursing care.[6] The Codex Theodosianus of 416 (xvi, 2, 42) restricted the enrollment on male nurses in Alexandria to 500.[7]

In the 14th century, the Alexian brothers existed as a Christian religious congregation with strong emphasis on care for the infirmed.[5] Later, John of God, following a conversion to Christianity, provided care for both the physically and mentally ill and notably challenged the stigmas associated with Mental Illness.[8] Later, he founded the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God which continues to work with the poor and infirmed to this day.
Reasons for low representation

There are several reasons suggested for a low rates of nursing by males: stereotypes of nursing, lack of male interest in the profession, low pay, nursing job titles such as Sister and Matron, and the perception that male nurses will have difficulty in the workplace carrying out their duties.[9] It is argued by the Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing that the "continuing stereotyping" of male nurses is the main reason for low intake.[2] Selected studies have showed that low representation of male’s nurses due to concerns that their touch when providing care would be misinterpreted and result in accusations of sexual inappropriateness.[10] Another reason as to why there’s low rates of male nurses is due to lack of encouragement to pursue this occupation. One reason being that men aren’t being encouraged by another male nurse or nursing student because there’s too few of them.[11] Men also report that there are no other men in nursing classes, and at times they’re discouraged from participating in all student activities.[11]

Plus this! Sad that we dominate the pay in a mostly female profession. But I like it!:smirk:

Professional life

Whilst there are low numbers of male nurses, there is no indication that they suffer in their career. Pay disparity results in male nurses earning more than their female counterparts, mainly from taking on more shifts and working overtime. Anecdotal evidence suggests that male nurses are more likely to be fast-tracked into management positions.[18] Furthermore, a report into the role of men in nursing found there to be more focus on human caring amongst male nurses.[19] In a nationwide sample 4,126 women and 395 men, men earned an average of $79,688 a year compared to an average of $73,090 for female nurses.[20] This shows that there’s nearly a $6,000 difference in pay between male and female nurses.[20]

Radiology certificate program would be my vote for medical career.  https://radiologyed.org/certificates

Mostly daytime hours, good money and less exposure to bodily fluids

Trex :nursemaryjane: the only time i was bothered by a male nurse was when I got a prostate exam from a dude with hands like an NBA player. I thought the cute female PA was gonna do it but instead she called in the big dude.
