Who uses grain for substrate? That is, for fruiting shrooms, not just for growing mycelum in jars?

If you do, and you like the results, can you please link your tek or at least photos?
Seems like it would provide more nutrient than just coir / verm.
Do you use grain with coir /verm, or just grain?
I thought bod does that, but the one of his I found looks like just jars.
Advanced search produced so many grain jar teks I couldn't find teks on just using grain to grow the actual above-ground part of the shrooms.
Thank you.

Are you talking about a tub full of nothing but grains? Or something like a bottle tek, where you fruit straight out of the jar?

Coir/verm and other bulk subs are pretty much for water only. The nutrients come from the grains. Grains don't hold water like the bulk substrates that give full canopy flushes. When grains are used alone as a substrate, they're cased.

I'm picturing a tub about 10 cm to 12 cm full of PCed grains, or a tub full of same height of PCed grains mixed with coir and / or verm.
I thought I've seen that on here.

That sounds like contam city, the reason we use PCed jars with grain inside them is because that uncolonized grain is a good meal for mold. You can PC your grain and try this out, grow some mush and let it colonize a coir/verm/uncolonized grain and watch how fast you get trich. Happy cultivating!

lol.
Thank you. Good to know.
I'm not planning on doing it if it's not a thing, but I thought someone here does that.
What about adding other shroom food to the tub? Asking only about cubes.
What do you use in your tubs? Your pictures look good. I assume you're also cloning?

You really just want to focus on providing your nutrients first, I believe there was something I read on pasteurized hpoo casings. Don't take my word on it though. Yes I am working with an army of clones. At the moment my main focus is APE. I am however working with Burma, B+, Nepal, Costa Rica, AA+, Rustywhyte, and Golden Teacher cultures. Some are simple narrowing of MS and others are clones. I don't tend to use isolates, unless using the biopsy method for LC. Thats about as narrowed as it gets for me.

Nobody does it like me 1 cup wheat 1 cup water 1cup vermiculite
Cook in mushroom grow bags hour and a half 15 psi let cool and inoculate in front of flowhood After bags are fully colonized take out put in greenhouse enjoy mushrooms
No grain prep no soaking no extra steps other than what I’ve said
Close bags up like this before you cook and leave them like this to colonize

My martha set up Light on 24/7 80° Humidity on for 15 minutes off for 1/2 hour

This.
You can grow with just grains but you’d have to soak them first like pf tek, and even then I don’t think they’d hold nearly as much water as a coir tub.

Grains work very well as a substrate, but as already said above, they do better with a casing layer. The casing allows you to add moisture, which can then slowly absorb into the grains to keep them hydrated. Or, as 99.99 did above, mix a bit of moist verm in with the grains and fruit them like cakes.
If you use cased grains, a few smaller trays of 1 to 2 inches thick will usually produce better than one large, deep substrate. RR
