I only found a few today sadly, but I decided to bio-assay a small specimen to see if any effects would be felt from such a small dose, I only found one with heavily blue staining and only ate that one to be safe. Hopefully this week they will start popping up again more frequently, and I will be able to bio-assay more fresh ones to get max potency, and I will make sure to weigh them to give an accurate dose to you guys.

I think there are at least two in the first collection, that are very likely a different species.

The two that don’t seem to be bluing, in this picture. The stipe looks to be is a different color, even accounting for the bruising on the others.
They are also both clearly thicker, than any of the others, starting at the base, but especially as they approach the pileus, as they do not taper, from the bottom up, resulting in a noticeably more slender apex than base, in the manner of every single one of the specimens showing definite blue bruising, at least in this first collection.

I really wanted to make sure to get this posted before looking through & admiring all the other pictures from the later days, because I didn’t want to forget or become distracted, in the interim.

Thank you so much manOwar :bow2:  for pointing those 2 out, at the time they did seem a bit different but I just thought they were just heftier specimens. I am going to be alot more vigilant & careful while looking out there for these little guys.:lahey:

The caps also look different, but that could easily be attributable to moisture levels, but the one that doesn’t show any bruising where I can see the gills a bit, seems like the spacing is less distant, than any of the ones with blueing, even accounting for the cap not having expanded to the same extent, they look more closely spaced, but it’s not a great shot of the gills, I admit.

The last thing that I will mention for now, is that most of the definite active specimens have a bend or a little hook at the very base, it does look as if very base of the two in question (at least in my mind) may have not come up with them, but I have no way of knowing, for sure, if there was much if any stem remaining behind.

Awesome find by the way! Such a delicate beauty and elegance! In recent years, I have been more and more appreciative, of Lilliputian grace and splendid details to be found amongst the endless varieties of the “LBMs,” that so many people dismiss, just walking past without even a second glance!

Again thank you so much manOwar for those 2 key features, I will be looking for both those features next hunt and I'll get some good gill shots as well. This is a genus I'm still new with and I appreciate all the help Man weeding out all the deadly poisonous look a likes.

For sure! I appreciate the opportunity to spot subtleties like that, I am kinda out of practice, at least with online IDs, I can’t get into my old account and kinda lost motivation to spend much time here when I did. When you go from being a TI to starting back at a post count of 0 it can be a bit discouraging. But really as far as life’s setbacks go, that’s pretty minor!

Is it possible to tell apart Pholiotina cyanopus and Pholiotina smithii macroscopically?
Or can these species not be told apart by naked eye?

Interesting finds! Was hoping to see someone post a pholiotina find..

I've tried comparing it to a couple specimens I found about a month ago. Look identical to my untrained eye, save for the bluing. I neglected to pick at the base which may or may not have an effect? I was trying to ID this and determine look alike but cannot find much info.

Found in grass near woodline as well. Pics below. What do you think?

Would you be willing to send me a spore print for my spore library or maybe a spore print and 2-3 specimens for my herbarium? This is one I don't have in my collection.

Pholiotina Smithii is another mushroom in the Pholiotina genus that bruises blue, contains psilocybin, and grows in the same areas as well as in bogs, ditches and swampy areas, commonly in sphagnum moss. They are also found along river banks and in lawns
scattered to numerous in mossin the late Spring, Summer, and perhaps early Fall, Looks a lot like Pholiotina smithii but differs microscopically in spore size and cystidia.

They are the same, the names are synonymous.

Are you telling me that Pholiotina cyanopus and Pholiotina smithii are the same species Doc?

Are cyanopus and smithii separate species? Or are they synonyms?

No, I believe that I misread or misunderstood what I was reading when I first saw this, my apologies.  I believe I was thinking about Conocybe smithii and Pholiotina smithii being synonymous. Now I read it again I don't know what I was talking about.

I shouldn't be responding to anything right now to be honest,  my mind definitely isn't where it should be. Don't mind me, my gears are grinding causing massive brain farts.
