About SFDs...

1. When it's time to shake the jar, something (mycelium, grain, water) will definitely hit the filter from below and stay on it. Is it a problem, potentially?
2. Is it ok to secure the filter on top of the lid using wide micropore tape, completely covering the filter?

1. No problem 2. That will restrict the flow through the filter, instead cut the micropore tape into thinner cuts and just secure the edges to the lid.

2. If you want to attach a filter to a hole you drilled in the lid (I assume), use some rtv silicone and glue it on. With just micropore tape it will for sure come off during PC'ing, shaking, handling, etc.

Good advice, rtv silicone is better but if your in a hurry micro tape will work it shouldn't fall off... I've used the same jars with MP tape loads of times they still do their job. I have heard of some brands of tape not sticking as well as other brands though.

Thanks guys. I really don't like working with silicone, so I thought of using micropore tape. I've got the 3M brand.
Actually I've used just a single layer of this tape for my very first run of oat jars, thinking the tape is actually a decent filter. Then I read it's not. Jars are looking good so far, but I definitely want to use something better next time, so I've ordered a pack of hydrophobic SFDs.

3M is good I use it too. Sfd's are the best filter 😁

You don't need rtv silicon, regular is fine, and you can get those small tubes from walmart so you don't have to use a caulking gun which is a giant mess.

Sounds like a plan. I'll buy a small tube from my Walmart equivalent and experiment a bit.

Hardware stores should carry them too, it's like a squeeze tube kinda like toothpaste.

Couple more questions:
1. When it comes to securing SFDs with silicone, should I use it more as glue ("under" the filter) or gasket ("around and over" the filter)? Or both? Or doesn't matter?
2. My SFDs are very thin teflon ones, 40-ish mm in diameter. Should I use the extra surface below the filter to punch more holes for GE in the lid, or is one hole enough?

1. It probably doesn't matter, as long as it's far enough toward the edge of the SFD that it doesn't squish in and cover part of the hole (with a 40mm SFD that won't be an issue unless you use way too much silicon). I do mine more as a "glue".
2. One hole should be enough, long as it's at least 3/8". I like 1/2".

The Dollar Stores and .99 Only Stores have been carrying high temp silicone tubes in black and clear. I myself love the smaller SFD’s. I’ve finally gotten my lid tek down after many trial and error. Even started soaking them in 10% bleach solution after each use, which I believe I got from reading RR’s notes.

Which dollar stores? We have dollar tree, dollar general, and I can't remember the other one around here... always good to find cheap silicon

I just put the entire SFD under my lid. I use the plastic lids with a 1/4" hole drilled in the center, and then just stick the entire SFD in, just like SpitballJedi's lid tek. And no, if all proper precautions are followed with sterilization, it doesn't matter if it hits the SFD when shaken. I've also began to use Tyvek from the post office if I stick to the metal rings and lids, and I use a whole circle of that also followed by locking it down with the ring.
All these things made life so much easier for me. I think polyfil is the worst and a pain in the ass
