Local Substrate Supplies

I like to purchase locally when possible. I started with Amazon sourced pellets and wheat bran. I stopped by our Tractor Supply store and picked up a few items.
I have only done a few blocks so far. The first ones were a bit rough and they are now colonized and starting to fruit (I will make a separate post for some help). The last six are really colonizing well. I think I got the water content better. I have been using 5 cups of wood pellets, 1 cup wheat bran, and then about 1450 g water.
How much of the rice bran would I use for the same amount of sawdust? Any concerns with what I purchased? Thanks!

What did you pay for that bag of rice bran? Cause I get 50lb bags of soy hulls for $12. You should really look around for soy hulls as they are the absolute best supplement. As for the amount just do a simple search for pellet/ bran ratio on here. Ive never used bran so I couldnt tell ya.

As for those wood pellets, those look like exactly what you want. I would use those over real sawdust any day.

I paid $27 for the 40# of rice bran. I made up some 5# bags last night and put 1 cup (5 oz) into each bag. It did not mix as well as the wheat bran I have been using, but not a problem either. Works out to ~$0.12/bag for the supplement. Right now I am putting a quart jar of spawn into each bag. I will probably reduce that over time. With that much spawn I am not sure I need the supplement, but I like to practice my technique.
I paid $4.99 for the 40# bag of pellets, but I got 20% off because it looks like the bag ripped and they had to tape it up. I use about 2# per bag, so at the normal price that is $0.25/grow bag. Overall, not a bad price since this is just hobby for me, not a business. I noticed that the sawdust felt a little courser than the stuff I was using from BBQ pellets. I really liked the texture of the mixture. I have not been adding Gypsum to the grow bags.
I asked them for soy hulls. They did not have anything labeled as soy hulls. They thought they were major components in some of the bags of feed, but nobody there knew for sure. I have an Atwoods near me and I will check there. Where are you getting yours?
I also picked up 50# of whole oats for $14 to use in my grain jars. I feel good that the local supply will do OK for my needs. Thank you all for the responses and advice!

I get mine at an Agway. You could even ask a local feed store to get them for you, just dont pay over $20 for them. Those pellets are the same I use as well, they are great. Make sure to tell them you want soy hulls and not soy pellets. They both work but non pelletized hulls are less messy.

I payed around 40 bucks for 55galons of soy hull pellets. Feed store people wondered why I only wanted a bucket full instead of a trailer full like most of their customers.

I have some friends at work that are large ranchers and buy a lot of feed. They called the feed company they purchase from and asked for soy hulls. They knew what they were but did not normally carry them. I guess they are not normal feed around here
He said he could get them, so I ordered 4 bags (40# or 50#, not sure) for $15 each. I will see how it goes.
