Second attempt at Oats
    #26989238 - 10/16/20 10:01 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Would anyone be able to chime in and let me know if my jars are OK or if I should try again. Any help is much appreciated!

Left looks suspect. Right looks ok. Both look moist.

Both look like they may have bacteria, but your chances for success are still pretty good, I would spawn them but don't expand those to more grain.

Is it because there's moisture and gelatinous grains on the side of the jar? I'm still learning the ropes and trying to get this stuff down.

Yeah pretty much.  That "squished against the side of the jar/wet" look.  Along with the variation of thick/white and not so white areas of mycelium (see pic 1 top vs. bottom areas)

Ah, now I see, much more wispy/dusty looking up top whereas it's thicker and denser near the bottom?

Is that the mycelium losing vigor because it knows there's a losing battle up top? I've seen vectors, or sectoring? The nomenclature is lost on me, but basically I've had jars where there's a distinct line between two patches of different growth and my understanding is that it's basically a molecular DMZ. Since this is bacterial, is the sectoring not as distinguished?

I'm not sure if you'd call it sectoring or not, when we're talking about distinct lines showing up in grain, but I know what you're talking about when you see a line like that, and usually yes I think it is where it runs up against a contam, usually bacterial.

It's a good question as to why that sometimes shows up and sometimes not, it may be due to a shake at one point distributing the bacteria all over, or it may just be different types of bacteria or something else that does that.  I'm really not sure?

Can't expect you to know everything! Just bouncing ideas off someone besides myself. Thanks for the insight!
