Dehydrating Issue

When I try and dehydrate my harvest, no matter the temp or duration (ranging from 135 to 165 and 18 hrs to 36 hrs) the mushroom stems are still bendy and not cracker dry. Are they reabsorbing the moisture in the air or something before I have a chance to take it out of the dehydrator? I have a 6 shelf cosori dehydrator. Thanks!

I have no experience with that particular dehydrator, but if they're not coming out cracker dry overnight at 165F I would have to say something is wrong with it.
Does it feel hot inside if you open it? Is there airflow?

I checked the temps with my infrared temp gun and they were accurate.

weigh some fruits before they go into the dehydrator and then weigh them again after 24 hours in the dehydrator. see how much weight they lose. they should lose about 90% of their weight. if that's not happening then there is something wrong with your dehydrator.

Well, cracker dry is cracker dry. Anything less is insufficient. If they're bendy they're not dry. Don't store them long term if they don't break crisp.

yeah for sure. but i'm just wondering if maybe they're actually cracker dry and he thinks they're not. some fruits will kind of bend a little bit even when they are cracker dry.

DampRid will finish your drying process if you’re having issues. It’s cheap and easy to use. Give it a try.

maybe the fan inside the dehydrator isn't working. have you checked to see if it's clogged or not spinning?

Damprid will not dry better or more effectively than a dehydrator thats working properly.

I didn't say it would, but it’s an easy way to get cracker dry when the fruit is almost there. You can’t just use DampRid alone obviously. When finishing with DampRid I see no difference in dryness vs a dehydrator.

Next time you try to dry a fruit with DampRid, get its weight after it's "done" drying in that manner. Then, throw it in the dehydrator for a while and test its weight. I'm curious to see the results. I'm being genuine

Yeah. A better way to test them is to see if you can crumble one into a powder with your fingers. Sometimes there's soft tissue that doesn't exactly feel like a cracker even when it's dry.
