Do spores ever not grow right off the cap?

I am wondering if spores are ever sterile, not in the sense of not contaminated, but in the same sense that a woman who has had her tubes tied is sterile.
I tried this on advanced search, but the first meaning of sterile kept coming up.
I know spores can be harmed by being too hot, but I'm just wondering if I take swabs from a mature cap, will it almost always grow if the user does it right?
Also is it possible to wipe a swab, have it become dark purple / brown / black but have it not be spores?
All the ones I've checked with a microscope have had spores. But does purple / brown /black from under a cap always mean spores?
I guess it just seems too easy. I'm wondering if I take a boat load of swabs and give them away, is it possible some just won't work even if the end user does everything right?
Thank you.

Swabs are tricky to use sometimes. I find simply streaking the swan around the plate will only work if the swab is super fresh. Otherwise it’s better to cut off some of the spore laden tip and push it into the agar. This will work much better, of course it means you only get one or maybe two germ plates per swab, so make the most of it.

Thank you. Very useful.
your typo "streaking the swan" - I'm sure you meant streaking the swab, but I actually searched "streaking the swan", I thought maybe it was a technique I hadn't heard of. Sounds like martial arts or ballet.
Maybe it should be the name of a tek. It sounds right. lol.
Do you push the swab under the agar at all, or just streak the swan?

Streak the swan,
I do both to cover all bases. Swabbing multiple plates just in case. Like said, many times the streak plates don't show growth, but its good when they do, because the colonies are usually pretty spread out.
Then I just jam the swab tip into the last plate to ensure germination. Kinda risky tho, if that plate doesn't turn out. I like the idea of pulling/cutting cotton off, so you can put some on multiple plates,, but I've never done it personally.

Thank you. Good info.
Swans and swabs are the same color. Swabs could be called swans.
