I'm gonna toss em in some grain tonight then and just see where they go. I still have that pin and a few other nat plates, so I should be good should this grow go wonky

Well my natalensis have started to fruit. The little container that i cased right off the bat with a bunch of vermiculite has a bunch of top pins and looks great but my shoebox (which i ended up casing late) mostly grew side pins on this flush. A small portion molded and was removed and patched with vermiculite soaked in peroxide and that’s holding it off for now.

*EDIT* there seems to be an issue with my images, working on it.

Just a heads up. I had an extra 1/4 pint of Natalensis spawn. I tossed it into a bag of my pan substrate (straw, horse poo, and coir/verm) it is in a big spawn bag. It will be interesting to see what it does...

What ratio?
Mine actually did pretty well on manure compost and verm. Yours have been great pinsets regardless though it’ll be hard to top that canopy from before.

I think these need to be more widely distributed. If you think cubes are easy then this is the easiest cube. Or an easier species to get fruits from.
Good looking canopies? That needs to be figured out still, right?
The amount of neglect, poor technique and idiocy on my part working with mycology has somehow lead to me having an overabundance of plates. I have 4 jars colonizing, 2 pins on agar and 10 more plates with different growth.
I'm gonna try to isolate and see what difference there is between the rhizo and tomentose growth if any. I also think i see 2 different types of tomentose growth? If thats possible? Some looks like pan myc whereas the other looks like cube myc. Is that a thing?

lol it’s like once the myc hits full colonization it immediately gets orders to expand upwards either climbing a wall or just inflating itself.
I’ve run I think 8 grows now and haven’t had any surface pins I can recall. I always end up having to flip it.

What is the dosing for these guys?
I have spores of zifo origin, had overlay, but still had a decent yield.

Natalentis has the same potency as APE??? So the Natalentis variety is far superior in potency than any other cube?

This is my first time getting real solid rhizomorphic growth on any plates so I'm super stoked. I took transfers from these but as you can see there was plenty to choose from on some of them.

So have certain parameters been found for optimal growth? Spawn to sub ratio, use a top layer, etc.?

Not really, as far as I can tell it’s basically a big crapshoot. Some people get canopies and some get bricks of weird rubbery myc.
But there’s a (in my opinion) good chance were also growing two different things here. One a cube from natal and the other the actual species natalensis.
That reminds me again it’s been forever since that sample was sent to be sequenced.
That tub is awesome funnyfungi let us know on the potency.

Yeah I was reading early on in the thread, and the results and pictures were all over. I would sure love to try this though, I'm thinking why the hell am I doing RW and PESA right now??? I should be doing this! If anyone would be so kind as to a print I would greatly appreciate it

I still think it's luck in genetics but I'd love someone to prove me wrong. Sometimes you get a beautiful tub while other times it'll be a rubbery mess.
I've stopped asking Alan about the sequencing maybe he forgot or has too much other stuff going on. We'll know exactly what Natalensis and NSS look like side by side eventually whenever Psilo and I get our spores from South Africa. Should be cool to see it documented from germination to fruits.

What are the odds that what we are seeing with results all over the map is due to this cube being much closer to its natural genetic line, as opposed to a variety that has years or decades of selective isolation/cloning/printing?
In addition to the two distinct species, that is. Although I supposed variation might even explain that. Don't the "true natalensis" seem more pan-like though?

Is the cube-like variation just as potent as the skinny-swirlys?
