Gymnopilus ID?
    #26987001 - 10/15/20 12:35 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Found these growing from a pine stump, in the exact same spot I found active gyms last December. NC piedmont.

Look like gyms to my amateur eyes, and they have that spicy gym smell I've come to love. Still waiting on a good spore print, but I can already tell they're rusty orange.

(They got a little beat-up on my walk home...)

Anyways, thanks for the assist!

Also, some bonus shrooms:

Amanita sp.?

More amanita sp.?:

Found these lying around; someone else picked 'em:

Russula sp.?:

If it was growing from pine it would probably be Gymnopilus voitkii, The next ones are Amanita muscari var. guessowii and the last is indeed a Russula

Last year I would've called 'em junonius, but I know that's up in the air now; is voitkii the new name for these?

Also, you're pretty sure about that guessowii ID? That real yellow one does have the rings at the base, I just noticed. Might have to go back for those too, lol :crazy2:

Im positive on the guesowii, and yes G. voitkii is known to grow from conifer wood, though these seem to resemble G. subspectabilis, are you positive its a pine stump?

In fact, I'm not positive it's a pine stump, it could be a really skinny young oak, maybe (I'm not great at IDing trees, lol).

Yeah, these look nearly identical to the G. subspectabilis I normally find around the bases of oak trees, so I'd say it's likely that

You can easily rule out A. bisporigera by taking a closer look at the volva.

I think you're right, Moria, and that my original stump ID was incorrect. Thanks!

Yeah, I was wary of the pale amanitas in particular, though I do think they're just sun-bleached. Might go back for that fresh yellow one tho.
