What is the absolute ideal fresh substrate for this method? I just moved to a new property and want to try this.

I don't think rotten mushrooms are a good source of spawn. Usually you want to use stem butts for free patches. I think phish mentioned he's transplanted a few patches with some mycelium. Substrates wise you have a lot of options. A grassy and shady spot would be good. Grass ditches where water collects. If you have some pine straw landscaping I'd toss spawn under there. Under bushes. Really anywhere that's not in direct sun would be ok.

I should've put something next to them to show scale, they're nice sized.
Nice cluster! You already have a scale... the leaves. Those are some fat leaves, so I know those caps are good sizes. Congrats

I am gonna try digging up some mycelium with pins tomorrow, I’ve just been a little nervous to mess with it since I want them to keep producing. Also have hundreds of butts scattered around my property in some amazing habitats. Hopefully next seasons there is some crazy yields! Has anyone seen kinda like mycelium arms/ mushroom shoots (if it’s ok to call it that) come off the butts after a few days? I had about 1lb of butts fro my last 2 harvests, and almost like a pseudo-stipe was starting to grow off a coupe of them.. I should have taken a pic, but was so dumbfounded when I saw it I just wanted to plant it.

I should clarify that I mean stipe butts and spore water. I am not in a hurry. I want the mushrooms to want to be here as is. I really believe that I have a great spot. I've been meaning to snap a pic.

I've buried a lot of stem butts but that's never yielded me a patch where they didn't already exist. I think the best tek is if you have a bunch of stem butts just blend them up with water, spread all over your yard, and cross your fingers. Spore water isn't worth much.

I have a jar of stem butts and shredded cardboard. The mycelium grows fast and has started to colonize the cardboard. I made a couple jars like this earlier in the season and planted the material in a park nearby but I don't know how effective that is. I think my next move is to try sugarcane pulp like they use in Mexico. I know they get outdoor grow beds that way.

For most wood lovers the best sub is woodchips/mulch. With welli I'd get some woodchips and mix em with that red clay but that's only speculation. Get a cardboard tray and remove the mycelium in large sections as not to disturb it. The less you touch it and move it the faster it will recover. Bury the cardboard tray in the bed or will help retain moisture and the myc will colonize it first before growing out into the sub. One of the benefits to this is the mushrooms will grow and drop all the spores on the bed so even if it is killed somehow the chances of recovery are much higher than if you just planted a cake of mycelium.

Do you think transplanting pins into cardboard and mulch too? Or bury the pins? Or dig a plug and transplant that?

I made a trek for it somewhere let me see if I can link it https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=26184928&page=0&vc=1#26184928 Cardboard pop trays work good, best to use something with a solid bottom to maximize the moisture
Mostly use this with big patches in public areas so I can move them somewhere I can harvest undisturbed. Got a mulch dump site a landscape company constantly replenishes that is my bread and butter.
I've had good results with cakes too, they just take an entire season to get a flush compared to an instant harvest and improved success rate.

Thanks man. Words can’t even describe it honestly. There is a constant nutrient supply and it seems to always be in the shade.

In general I think digging up patches is a bad idea. You are more likely to kill an existing patch rather than propagate it.
