Plan for first growing experience (any advise?)
    #26985218 - 10/14/20 02:05 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Ok, so this is gonna be my first project with growing mushrooms.
Once i get this done, I will start experimenting with agar and more strains.

:mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

I will write the steps that I plan to follow for the process, so you can advise or correct me (if needed).

-I will start form a Ecuadorian spore syringe-

1- Boil brown rice grains for about 10 minutes, then wait until they are dry.

2- Mix it with a little bit of vermiculite? idk

3- Fill 5 jars of 250 cc with the rice (or the mixture) (not full, leaving an air gap at the top)

4- Close and sterilize (pressure cooker, about 60 min) (with foil and so)

5- Into a still air box, inoculate about 1cc for jar.

6- Dark and warm until full inoculation (the room where I plan to do it its somewhat cold, and at night it can be around 17ºC)

7- When fully colonized: mix the mycelium with a mixture of coconut coir and vermiculite, and maybe a little bit of gypsum for Ph. Cast into a dark plastic bag (brick cake format)

8- Monotube with closed holes and maybe perlite layer on bottom (for humidity). Cover cakes with foil on top until fructification state? (for increase Co2)

9- Keep it closed until fructification state

10- Open the holes of the monotube (with poly filter?) and start to mist and ventilate when the primordia appear

11- When the veil is opening, pick the mushrooms.

12- Soak the cake for 12 hours for more fruiting

13- Spore stamps + dry mushrooms

That would be the process that I intend to carry out, now some doubts that arise:

1-Inoculation jars need a poly filter? my idea for the cover of the jars was to just make a small hole for the needle, and cover it with resistant to high temperatures silicone, thus during inoculation, when removing the needle, the hole closes immediately (for sterilization, loosen the lid of the jars to prevent them from exploding) (I hope hahaha)

Or is it better to cover the holes with micropore tape?

Do you need a filter whith this jar size?

2- It’s a nice idea cover the bulk mix and mycelium with foil (on top) until fruiting stage occurs?

3-  To inoculate is it better to simply use the grain of rice, or mix it with a little vermiculite?

4- 1cc of spores are ok for a 250cc jar?

5- As the inoculation stage would have somewhat low temperatures. Could I increase them a little bit with a hot wire hotbed at the bottom?
With a sand separation between the heat source and the jars. (just some ºC, for being about 20-24ºC)

6- I must wait for the fruiting stage to moist the pearlite bottom layer of the monotube, right?

Thank you so much for your time! :mushroom2:

And sorry if there are some typos hahahaha

Hey brother, I'm a newbie too and you're already on the right track for looking on shroomery.

Although I can't answer many of your questions, I would highly recommend looking up Bod's Easy AF Tek. He breaks everything down really well and it's simple and easy for beginners like us.

I wish you the best of luck homie!

Hey whats up

I'm not sure about that plan mate.

Why not follow a tried and trusted tek: BRF PF Tek?

1. You can do brown rice but it's the community consensus that there are WAY better options. (Think Millet, Rye, Wheat, Oats, WBS)

2. Don't put verm in your grain jars. Find a better tek, and get more precise with your moisture content so you don't have to add unnecessary ingredients to soak up the excess water unprecise / lazy prep.

3. Not sure how to read the way you are saying this, but yes the top of your myco jars need an air gap / "plenum" of air for gas exchange and mycelium development.

4. Jars go 90 minutes minimum, bags go longer.

5. If you are going spore to grain (what it sounds like) just do 5-10 drops max.

6. Room temp with ambient light. The need for darkness is outdated and there is evidence to suggest that myc and mush benefit from a light cycle / natural circadian rhythm. 17 Celsius (62 F) isn't too cold for night time temp drops. It's better to let them run at natural temps in this scenario than trying to heat jars artificially. That will likely cause problems and is not worth the very small time savings imo.

7. Pretty much... You can also go straight coir, but verm and gypsum are used by many. I like simplicity of ingredients with dialed in processes personally. I will try to improve in any way I can before adding more ingredients. I mix straight in the tub, but I know people that mix in a bag, set the bag in the tub, flatten the sub out and cut the bag excess away leaving behind a portion of the bag to act as a liner, but it's personal preference.

8. Wait... are we talking monos or cakes now???? For the purposes of my response we are sticking with monos... No perlite with bulk subs. Not a cake girl myself, so I won't weigh in there.

9. Put into fruiting conditions right at spawning. My standard operating procedure, as well as the other bulk cultivators I know. Adding the extra step is a little outdated and unnecessary in most scenarios with cubes IME.

10. Polly is an option, but try to get it dialed in right so you can keep fanning and misting to the bare minimum. Not at all if you can. Try these EZ dialed options.

11.

12. Again not a cake girl, I thought we were talking about monos. Your post was a little confusing at first. Hang around some more, and the terminology will get easier.

13. If you get to this point, throw a party!

-----------------------------------------------------------

1. You do need some form of gas exchange. Whether it be a polly filter (how I started) or SFD filters, or even like some people do just turn the lid a quarter turn to loosen it a bit and get exchange that way. But yes, you need something.

2. No. Just mix, and spawn to fruiting conditions.

3. I answered this above. Ditch the verm, get a better tek that is more dialed in.

4. If it's 5-10 drops for a quart jar (1,000 CC) then certainly don't do any more than 5 drops for your little jars. Go 5 drops. Maybe even 3.

5. Abandon ideas of incubators. It's usually a noob thing. And the real cultivators that use them are full on farm level production professionals, and they heat a small room, not a rubbermaid tote which is a different ball game.

6. Again, no perlite in Monotubs, and I am just gonna skip this one I think, there is enough above.

Good luck on your journey! :goodluck:

:heart:XOXOX:heart:

Hey! Thank you for your answers

Yes, the terminology is still a bit confusing for me, although I know what I want to say, I still messing up some terms hahahaha (even more so with the change of languages and others).

I was referring to the monotube format, the idea of cakes does not convince me at all.
With cake I meant the block that the mycelium forms with to the substrate, but I understand the confusion

I was referring to placing "bulk substrates" (?) inside tuppers (or something like that), and these, inside a monotube, surrounded by a layer of perlite, and not using the full monotube box for the substrate mix. But maybe its just better using the full extension of the box for the substrate mix, idk.

I will try with a poly filter then

Thank you for your advises, pretty noob in this subjet (yet) :mushroom2:

Yes, ditch the perlite idea in the mono, and just use the whole tub.
