General Advice on Current Grow and Setup
    #26985409 - 10/14/20 03:43 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I'm looking for just general advice on my current grow and setup. Sustainments, improvements, and recommendations... and i have some questions to sprinkle in.
I tried growing mushrooms when i was in my early 20's. Had one good flush, and that was it. Decided to start again now that I'm older, more financially stable, and not living in a house with a bunch of people.

    • First batch was cakes, Golden Teacher, 12ct. Got about 26g dry. 2nd batch, lost all jars to contamination. (Uncolonized BRF cakes were purchased online for batch 1, 2 and 3)
Batch 3, lost 3 of 9 to contams. Got 20g dried. All grown in the basic kit from Midwest. (Tub, perlite, light, manual fanning, heat mat)
Decided to upgrade capacity, since i have many more jars working now. Got the Martha Setup from Midwest.I think it was like 230  after shipping and taxes. Martha is set up. Only upgrade is the jar for the humidification. Plastic jar was small and getting real hot. Got a .5 gal glass jar.

    • Currently have 2 spawn to bulks in the tent (BRF Jars, grated, cased in pasteurized coco coir, Treasure Coast) After spending time on this forum, it's obvious that there are many ways to do things, and everyone has their own opinion on what is effective. So as experiment, one spawn to bulk is in a plastic tub still, and the other is on the plastic liner, although the sides fell down. also 9 brf jars (Hawaiian). Still have some jars because spawning to bulk is brand new to me, and i wanted to try multiple approaches. I was just going to do everything from cakes, but after finding videos on spawning to bulk from BRF cakes, decided to try it. I had approximately 9 jars each of Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, and Treasure Coast. So i went 2/3:1/3 Spawn to bulk, and cakes.

However, the PRs had basically stopped colonizing the jars (70-95%, varied), so were spawned prematurely. I scraped off as mush of the uncolonized BRF as possible. I spawned the TC at the same time. They were all around 90%, but stalling out as well. The Hawaiian cakes were fully colonized upon birthing.

ALL cakes were dunked 24 hours, at room temp (to include cakes used for 'spawn to bulk') prior to birthing or casing. Cased species were allowed to recolonize for 11 days. I thought i was supposed to wait for the tops to be 100% colonized on the top layer, but i did use a top layer that was 100% Coco Coir. Following the guide from Midwest, i saw that when you can see any on the top, the underlying layer was most likely 100% colonized and ready to fruit (not sure if this is correct).

    • Okay, so the tent itself is maintaining 99% humidity. So it might be 100%. I DO NOT have the controller that cuts off the ultrasonic humidifier and heat at the appropriate levels. The temperate is maintaining fairly constant between 70-71F. I have the infrared heater OFF, because the ambient temp in the house is keeping the tent at said temp. For the ultrasonic humidifier, i started with a timer. 30 min ON and 60 min OFF. I adjusted to 30 min ON, and 90 min OFF. It only controls in 30 minute intervals. I'm still evaluating the humidity. I'm shooting for 90-95%. but holding at 99%, allegedly. If you zoom in on the spawn-to-bulks, you can see small water droplets on the mycelium/colonized parts of the 100% Coco Coir layer. Not sure if this means it's too humid or bad for pinning/growth. For a martha tent, should i open it up for about an hour per day to encourage evaporation? I've been reading the forum, and that seems to be the important trigger for pinning. But there is no exhaust system built into the tent.

I'm not sure if it matters, but just as an extra precaution, I have an air cleaner in the room I'm using. I think it was down to 0.3 microns. It is a dedicated room, with the door closed 99% of the time. I know it's not a "clean room", but i figured it'd help for the ambient air quality in the room. So i think that since the air is cleaned, and mycelium is fully developed, it should be okay to open for a little but each day? Also, HVAC to the room is disabled. basement HVAC routing is closed, and stuffed with plastic in the actual room. so its all radiant heat. I had to use artificial light, because the sun actually hits the martha tent and raises it to about 80 degrees. So windows are blacked out.

    • Okay, onto future projects. I have about 40 jars (all 1/2 pt) of Albino Penis Envy in the works. Inoculated 9/5. I plan on spawning-to-bulk all of them. After I inoculated everything, i found out that APEs aren't ideal for jars. Hakuna Matata. The plan is to grate them, spawn-to-bulk, using cow manure as the casing mix. Hopefully I can still get some decent flushes. I've decided I'm done with jars, and inoculated 6ct, 3lb grain bags, but those were just inoculated around 3 days ago. But the jars are doing good for the APEs. I definitely have some questions/concerns about them though.  Based on the general consensus from this forum when i previously posted about problems with jars 'stalling out', i inoculated the APEs, and did not cover them with any foil or any other filters (other than the 1/2 in layer of dry vermiculite). It appears that helped mostly, and grew faster than previous strains/jars. Haven't seen any mold at all. But i do have  concerns about bacteria (gray color on the BRF specs, which i will elaborate on). One jar has an definitely one abort that grew inside. Probably 2. but it's not 100% colonized. Will an abort cause rotting while still inside the jar? Is it a bad jar now? one jars has browning in the middle of the mycelium. I think this is just rust probably from the lids, specifically the drill holes, that got into the moisture in the jar. Another jar has browning right along the edge of the uncolonized portion of the jar. Not sure if this is just a symptom of something regarding the last bit of uncolonized BRF. Doesn't look like mold though. And another jar, the slowest one...the BRF is looking gray. But not like mold. I thought maybe is was just from prolonged saturation of the BRF? I am using a CrockPot and Instapot for my sterilization. They don't have pressure settings other than low and high. The high pressure is 12 and 1o i think, respectively. I'm PC'ing for 90 minutes, and not having issues with contamination i don't think.

    • Sorry for the college paper.... but I'm just looking for general analysis, constructive criticism, answers, things I'm doing right, things I'm fucking up, advice, etc. from the community. I'm really excited about this hobby, and i think it's really fun. Not to mention, the payoff is amazing. Connecting with the universe, then separating from it and understanding that you're only borrowed energy from that universe, is an amazing and humbling experience that really puts your ego in check lol.
    Thanks in advance!
