The lids were pretty much hand tight, not loose. And it was just water. Thank for the reply

If the jars got above about 95 deg, then that very well could have killed the mycelia, stunted it at the least. The bits near the sides of the jar are naturally going to be hotter and most likely to die, the guys deeper in the center of the jar may have survived and are now just coming out to play.

i observed the same phenomenon when i dunked cakes in skim milk. thick, new mycellial growth.
it's a good sign, you'll soon be getting new pins.
