First time with cactus 1

So first off I want to show off the latest members of my family! This is my first time with cactus and I’m hooked already. I already have seeds on the way and plan to continue nurturing cactus for many years. Are there any books or communities online that are recommended? Will the cut section ever grow or does it scab over and maintain its current height and width for its lifespan? What is the lifespan of E. pachanoi? If the main section doesn’t grow once it’s been cut, I assume the new growth is in the form of pups, like many of my cuttings have? #2 is a great example of how I can’t imagine the mother cutting below not growing anymore because it appears the new growth would eventually outgrow and become too large or heavy for its original mother? It appears many of the cuttings have gray scars which I assume are from being cut and pulled from the earth and handled and shipped. What about the black spot on one of my pups (#4) and the smaller cracked black pepper type spots on (#3) How did the one new section of growth form in the small skinnier section lower and then fatten up further above on (#2) almost as if a belt had been tied around it and over tightened? Would this have to do with growing conditions or genetics to the individual cactus? Overall how do they all look? Obviously not perfect cosmetically, but it’s a start.

You are on what I believe to be one of the most active cactus forums. There may be a few others, but they just don't have the activity levels going.
The plants will make a good start for San Pedro cuttings and the spot is probably just another scar like the rest.

The black mark could be from overwatering or needs nutrients? I dunno, the mark on #3 is similar.
The skinny part is just etoliated from a time of little light. It can still hold a foot or two on top... then cut and root that foot burying etoliation, and let the base pup.
I'm a newbie myself, you should join the huge Trichocereus Community on Facebook, there are a few other Facebook groups too.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’m glad to know it’s not looking more serious than a scar from shipment.

Thanks so much for your reply. That makes sense to me in such a simple explanation. So the idea of cutting is to get new growth or pups, and leave behind the old section as more of a base to support new growth. How long can I expect a rooted mother to produce pups before dying? For example, I have a rooted cactus that has a pup growing on it that was cut. Neither the mother or the pup will continue to grow, but either one should produce new growth correct? Like if I were to cut a growth that was on top of rooted growth will the second growth produce pups or will the original rooted growth produce pups? This is pretty neat stuff. I will look into making a Facebook and joining that community. I know a majority of my questions can and will obviously be answered by just watching my cactus grow over time. I’m just really getting into them lately. Thanks for all the help so far

FUCK FACEBOOK!

Haha I haven’t had a Facebook since 2015, but my girlfriend has one and I can certainly see the draw of it for certain social networking features and joining groups. I don’t have any friends or family so no need for it there.

Both mother and pup can produce new pups, and the cactus will likely outlive you. I look at my plants as going to my son one day, and lots of other kind folks.
That's the beauty of Facebook groups. There's a love of cacti that goes beyond money. Most people are as happy to trade as sell, and gift generously. Soon you'll have many of the most potent and beautiful cacti known to man.

My girlfriend joined that group on your recommendation and the first thing I see is a Yogi cutting giveaway! You’re absolutely right haha what an awesome community there. I’m all about bartering and gifting. Thanks so much for all the advice, friend. It’s much appreciated. Namaste.

Haha! Good news fellow non Facebook user. My girlfriend just showed me a post from their community and they’re starting a dedicated web forum soon outside of Facebook. Not sure if it will hold its own against shroomery...

I don't like Facebook either, but I am a very active member of that community. In fact, TTC is the only reason I have a Facebook anymore. It is one big happy cacti loving family over there. Get involved and make some friends with the OG's and the inner group (you'll quickly recognize who they are.. the ones who are very involved and pulling the strings and shaping the community for the next generation" and the breeders and it will be like a second home for ya haha, Ive been known to do some giveaways as well, so check often and keep your eyes open!

I am active there now through my girlfriend’s Facebook and loving the community. I’m so excited for them to launch their dedicated website outside of FB, though. It is a great space though for those who love cacti.
