I'm sure it would work for something, but won't have much benefit for this hobby

You can use it for filtering air in a room, not suitable for laminar flow or sterile work.

these things can work assuming you have a solid room to work in.
i do all my work in a room with a similar filter and have low contam rates.

may not work so good in old drafty apts house or trailers.

You're doing your work in open air?

Are you doing agar and grains?

If you're just doing pf tek I can see you getting away with that since you can
pretty much inoculate in open air, but with agar/grains it is highly unlikely
that that filter will do anything useful

Before I work at my flow hood I turn it on and let it run for an hour or so to scrub the air a bit. I don't know if it does any good or not.

Working in a still air box, you can't sterilize the air, so you are working with physics instead - keeping the air still so nothing will settle into your media. Doesn't matter if the room is dirty.

A flow hood works by blowing sterile air in a laminar flow - any contams settling down from the air in the room get trapped in the laminar flow and are pushed forwards instead of settling down.
You need sterile air blowing towards you in a laminar flow.

If you used that filter in the unit it is intended for, it will scrub the air a bit, but that's all. It certainly won't hurt, but it's nothing to rely on.

I didn't want to use it in the device , i wanted to put a fan on top and block the bottom and make a little room in front of the fan and work there , something like that

Yes and like I was trying to explain, all that would accomplish is blow sterile air, which will blow contams all over the place, and into your work.
The air has to be both sterile *and* in laminar flow to be able to work in front of.

Without sterile, laminar flow , the only other way to accomplish our sterile work is by keeping the air still. That is too hard to do in a room, so we make still air boxes.

Putting a fan on it would basically do the same thing the unit it goes into does.
