Emergency DIY Agar
    #26984034 - 10/13/20 08:24 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So I know there are a good amount of people who,at some point, don't have the money/materials neccesary to clone that perfect Cap and/or save the last of their genetics in time.

I just happen to be broke AF,so I decided to try to make my own Agar with rice water and unflavored gelatin.

I read everywhere that gelatin turns to liquid as it's colonized and wouldn't work, but I went for it anyways. The results are interesting enough to me that I figured it was worth getting feedback on it.

Firstly, the agar dishes have to be kept in the fridge after PCing, essentially at all times. I had read somewhere that Mycelium grows in the fridge, just very slowly.
Because if this,I inoculated with spore Syringes and immediately put them in the fridge.

I had also read somewhere that fridges occasionally heat up before they cool down again and that it caused condensation which helps growth somehow?

Well, I also figured that the cold would hinder bacterial growth even more than the Mycelial growth. So I would take the dishes out every single day, multiple times to let them warm up to the point the gelatin was only slightly jiggly, then put them back.

It seemed to work very well and they started growing in less than a week.

The growth rate wasn't making me happy,so I had another idea. I have been using an ice pack to place them on. The cold keeps the gelatin solid, while allowing continual Mycelial growth. Same idea on hindering bacterial growth with the cold, except the Mycelium stays just under room temp.

Not only has it been working, but the Mycelium seems to be growing into the gelatin and up into the air, without any contamination.

I'm not quite sure about this, but I was thinking it would be MUCH easier to get a sample with the proper tool with the Mycelium growing upwards like this.

I haven't posted anything like this before, but I figured there might be a chance this could help people in a tight spot.

If you look at all these pics, you can see the Mycelium growing upwards, all around the ring.

Don't forget to play them some chill music. They're people too. :p
