Cactus and Woodchips ???
    #26983494 - 10/13/20 02:41 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, I am in the process of getting my potted cacti out in the garden. For this I have build a raised garden to plant the cacti in, now for the sake
of maximizing my cultivation area I am planning on topping this garden off with woodchips at a depth of ~20cm. This is to suppress weeds and of
course I am going to throw heaps of woodlover spawn in there as well.

The only thing I am not sure about is if it is detrimental to the cacti having the woodchips going right around their base at that depth. Have
heard that some plants don't like it cause the woodchips are taking up lots of nitrogen while decomposing.

Any enlightenment appreciated

The misconception about wood chips taking up nitrogen comes from tilling wood chips into the soil, especially green ones. Wood chips sitting on the soil surface will only absorb nitrogen from the air and contact points.

I personally would not use wood chips around cactus unless you keep the wood chips away from the plants. I use leaves, draw, and pea gravel, but opt not to use wood chips around my cactus.

The woodchips could make a high moisture environment at the base of the cacti.
I dont think most cacti would like that and probably die.
The woodlovers would like it very much though.

Tank you guys for the help. I solved it by putting an old car tire over each planted cactus to create a barrier. Pea metal inside, wood
chips outside. Now my cacti are keeping me entertained while I am waiting for the woodlovers to hit the dance floor.
