Surface Contam? (Update: Harvest or Wait)
    #26982072 - 10/12/20 06:17 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hello guys, would like to ask little help here.

This is my Minitub (20 liters/21 quarts) situation at the moment, I built it with previous Shroomery knowledge:

There are some yellowish areas on the surface, dont know if is a contam or the mycelium reaction to some substrate component.

Info: Spawned 3 corn colonized jars (500 g - Strain: B+ AKM) with the substrate prepared as:
- 2,5 jar Cow manure (cow pop from gardening store)
- 2,5 jar Verm
- 1 jar coco coir
- 4 spons of coffee
- 2 spons of Dextrose
- Water until saturation (few drops when squished)
Pasteurized for 3 hours under 60 to 75 °C.

My surface "terrain" is terrible, not plain at all so it accumulates water in some points.

I also noticed that after pinning some areas of the surface are getting dry faster than before.

You really should not add coffee or sugar (dextrose) to your substrates, I would leave that out next time.

It's probably fighting some bacteria, but it really doesn't look bad to me

Thank you for the feedback Forrester, for the next time I will go simple coir, verm and gyp.

As it’s my first mini flush I will wait for it and trow it away and start again with a new mino design and substrate.

My dehydrator may arrive between tomorrow and next Monday, at the moment i'm drying with a common fan for 12 h and placing in a jar with food silica for 5 days. As discovered here this isnt the proper way to dry, then i bought the Presto 06300.

You guys think, considering the currently status from the pics bellow, i can wait the dehydrator to harvest? Specially considering next monday as latest day to arrive?

I also would like to eat some fresh, never done before, actually I have little experience with mushroom. I took 2 g from my harvest of my first PF tek last week, but they were far from cracker dry and had a mild experience, similar to 1 g, im sure its because the improper drying process, i was anxious to try out the mushes and didint wait enough time to dry it on the silica.

To eat it fresh, due to some yellowish color of the substrate on some area is it better to make a tea and kill any bacteria? Like 20 g fresh, cut in small pieces and boil?

PS: Sry for any English mistakes, not my mother tongue.

For fresh, yes I think tea would be best.  I think tea is best anyway for less nuasea/stomach issues.

I probably wouldn't wait more than a day to harvest those, you don't have access to an oven you can use?

Okay to harvest now and put into your current drying process. Then finish them drying when the dehydrator arrives.

If you want to eat some fresh, assume they're 85% water. 2g dry would be ~13g wet. Re-dose 50% more in an hour and a half if needed. To avoid the bacteria, cut them from the substrate at the base, so you're only eating mushroom.

I don't know how to make tea, but if you do, go for it

I will wait until tomorrow to harvest, hope dear Amazon bring my acquisition tomorrow.
@Forrester I will research on how to dry in the oven, if you have some advice please share.

@DoDecaPus good idea, gonna cut it on the base.

I just did the oven method because I had some wild lion's mane that needed dried quick and my dehydrator was packed for moving, it's easy - just put them spread out flat on a tray in the oven at about 200F.  Leave the oven door slightly open.  Point a fan towards the oven to keep air moving.

I didn't even use a fan I just opened the door and blew out humid air every once in a while.  Only takes a few hours.

Amazon just delivered the Presto, I harvested the mushrooms and for my surprise they had grown more at night, didn't expect to have these big fruits, much larger than my PF Tek attempt.

Was a nice first run, learned a lot.

@Forrester Hell yeah! Its impressive how the dehydrator is much more efficient than simple fanning, theu will be really fry after 12 hours.

Now I will create a new minitub following designs tested here, what do you like most, Golden Teacher or PE6 for my next try?
