San Pedro Cactus cuttings - how to do it properly?
    #26981791 - 10/12/20 03:33 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I followed an online guide for Trichocereus Pachanoi (San Pedro) and used special cactus soil, added extra perlite for drainage, and added a little bit of desert sand (and a layer of gravel at bottom of pot.)

I put two ~10" cuttings about 2" deep into the soil, watered the pot so the soil was moist, then let it sit outside with indirect sunlight.

After 5 days, there are white spots on the cactus - can't remember, but I don't think they were there before. Additionally, my moisture sensor shows the soil is still 10/10 moisture (meaning max water content) even though it has been days since I originally watered it.

I followed the guide perfectly: small layer of rocks/gravel on bottom of pot, cactus soil with extra perlite, sand... all of these things are supposed to increase drainage, yet the combination has resulted in soil that retains moisture like a SOB.

What should I do?

Its been 5 days, should I remove the cuttings and use different soil? Or should I wait the full 30 days to see if it has rooted?

You need like 50% perlite if your cactus mix is crappy like many are...

Also, no roots = no water!

I would unpot and dry in sun/with fan then repot shallowly in dry soil with extra perlite.

yeah give it like a month before you start watering (lightly!) - they need to root before they can drink, otherwise they will drown and rot

Damn, they've been sitting in a Miracle Grow cactus soil and I added extra perlite, then watered them (some random guide online said to water T. Pach cuttings.)

Will removing them from the pots damage them? And will they not grow without a boat load of perlite?

I added a little sand into two of the pots, only to find out that small granular sand actually retains moisture and screws up drainage (god damn these BS online "how to" guides.) And after some research, it turns out Miracle Grow's cactus soil has time-released fertilizer at some inanely high NPK levels: its like 21/14/21, and I've read that T. Pach likes little nutrients. Should I just toss this cactus soil and find something else?

sandy yard soil works fine for my cacti.
maybe  move them to a sunny spot so they dry out faster

Pull them out and dry them asap.

For soil, I take happy frog and mix it with 50% Pumice or pea gravel. I then add perlite to that until its more perlite and pumice or gravel than soil. You can get away with more organic material but I like to water and feed multiple times per week to really turn up the growth.

To root, I put them 2 inches into dry sand in a bright window. Check them after 2 weeks or so. When you see roots, then put them into your soil mix. Only a little water for the first month or so. You want the roots having to search for water so that they grow.
