Not pinning yet (or fully colonizing)
    #26981775 - 10/12/20 03:26 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hey everyone, on September 8th I mixed a small tote up to a 3rd of its capacity with a substrate mix of: wood pellets, oats, and a cow manure compost soil bag i got from lowes (can't recall the brand).
I inoculated the mix in about 4 different spots at 2ml in each spot.
The strain i used was B+

In my 1st week I covered it in a blanket after sealing the top with 2 layers of tinfoil and then, set a timer for 7 days. I notice some condensation, but left it alone.

In my 2nd week, The entire surface was colonized and was beginning to gain some depth. I also cut out a hole in the lid and switch the tinfoil out for glad wrap.  Alot of condensation present, nearly soaked. I wasn't misting until October.

In my 3rd week I removed the lid for 7 days just for kicks, and put cardboard around the sides to block light and then put it under a LED grow light red/blue/white on a 8/16 cycle. I began misting daily this week until I saw a surface tension of water.

The 4th week, I put the lid back on with the glad wrap. Continued misting daily.

5th week, I cracked the lid and continued misting daily. The conditions have not changed since then.

My question is why haven't my mushrooms fully colonized yet and began pinning? Do I need to stay the course and be more patient? Or did I just not inject enough liquid culture to my substrate? Because of how much substrate I used? The entire mix could potentially fill up a 5 gallon bucket. Or is my lighting off? Or am I just using the wrong type of substrate for my strain?

This isn't a tek. Kiss kiss.

I'm confused. Did you just mix all that shit together in a tub and spray spores on it? Did you sterilize anything? Where did this idea come from?

You clearly have a lot of reading to do. Toss that current tub in the trash, do research, get more spores and get to work! There is a vast amount of knowledge here at this website, so get reading and hit us up again for more help

I researched the strain abit and figured those ingredients for my substrate fit the B+ strain sort of well. I did have better luck with Pf tek though. Because of the sterilized contents im assuming.

B+ is not a strain and does not have different cultivation parameters compared to any other Psilocybe cubensis mushroom.

Yes the lack of sterilization definitely was a big reason that tub is failing, but even if you sterilized everything and did the same process, all you would be left with was a tub of mold. The process that I and most other people here do is Agar->grains->coir+verm=mushrooms

Each step has its own learning curve, but is relatively easy to do once you do it a dozen times.

That being said, the PF Tek works great and is far superior to the method you described in the first post.

I'd really like to see pics of this grow... Where did you get the idea for the steps you've done?

Threads describing these types of grow attempts pop up on here probably every single week, so I'm not gonna scold you or anything. Suffice it to say that you will never get good, consistent results with those kinds of improvised methods

Try reading as many of these as you can before you start your next grow:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24144021

If you insist on keeping this one going you need to upload pics so we can see what it currently looks like. You might have a tub full of mold, in which case it'll never pin (or if it does it could be a totally diff species of mushroom)

If you went spores directly to grains and manure there's a pretty damn good chance that what you're growing is a tub full of molds and bacteria

I think the recommendation here to throw out the tub is kind of silly and definitely premature. Mushrooms grow in unsterile conditions all over the world; why would you tell him to toss something that’s perfectly capable of producing fruits just because it doesn’t follow a tek we use here? For sure he should get a new grow started the right way, but he hasn’t said anything that indicates his substrate is contaminated anyway, though it likely is.

That tub has been going for over 5 weeks now. There are many ways to grow mushrooms without following an established tek, but this is not one of them. Yes, mushrooms grow in unsterile environments out in nature, but definitely not in plastic tubs.

Locomoco, if you had any desire to see if you could salvage this project, I would recommend finding a shaded spot outside, digging a little hole and mixing all the substrate in it. Maybe you will get lucky!

And hey, even if you don't get any mushrooms, you will have some great soil to grow other things in!

Um, looking through your gallery, not even a tiny bit of your surface is colonized. Why did you say this?

He said it’d been five weeks since inoculation, without ever keeping the environmental aspects of the sub the same for more than a week at a time. Even in sterile growing conditions, I wouldn’t be surprised that a substrate showed signs of stalling/slow growth while being repeatedly subjected to changes in FAE, light, humidity, temperature, and other conditions. But after seeing the pics, OP just wasn’t being honest about what was happening so who knows.

I was picturing a half-colonized tub just not showing new signs of growth, when he’s actually at 1-2% colonization. Definitely a different picture than what was painted.

Hey bro, I commend you for trying but as others have said, you need to research as much as possible before diving in. No worries though, you've came to the absolute perfect place to learn. Theres a lot of good teks in my signature and many others that aren't (I keep meaning to update that).

Spores are likely to be contaminated with mold or bacteria therefore it's best to clean up a culture through agar work. (You will need a pressure cooker/canner and a still air box for that.) If you don't have a PC, and believe me, they're hard to find right now, PF Tek will be the route you wanna take. I skipped PF Tek and went mini bulk, so I cant give you any advice on that but plug that into the search engine and you will find a tek.

If you do have a PC, you're gonna wanna use it to sterilize some hydrated grain. When you have a good mycelium culture on agar, you'll use it to inoculate the grain and when that jar is fully colonized, you can then spawn it to a tub of substrate. Go ahead and skip trying to use manure and all that because it has to be pasteurized and there's no reason to add unnecessary steps that noobs like us will likely screw up. Instead, get yourself a big block of Coco Coir and use that as your substrate.

After that its just a matter of keeping surface conditions right so make sure you read up on that as well. You don't need a fancy grow light. You can use any artificial light thats close to 6500k. Its believed that a 12/12 light cycle (meaning 12 hours on, 12 hours off) is beneficial for all stages of mycelium growth. You can also just put the tub near a window where it gets indirect sunlight.

I hope it works out for you. It would be awesome to see you put out some real nice tubs after such a bad first try.

Oh, and stay away from Reddit! There's lots of outdated and downright awful advice there. Good luck.

Yup, that's a tub full of mold my friend. Dump it in the trash and clean it out with soap, hot water, maybe some bleach or distilled white vinegar

Absolutely. I don't see a speck of anything that looks like healthy cubensis mycelium anywhere on that tub. Just a cute little sprout!

OP, you have just joined the super exclusive club of people who failed miserably at their first grow! We here at the Shroomery represent a pretty hefty portion of this club, myself included. Welcome! Now it's time to get back on that horse and get growing again. Do a bunch of reading and try your hand at the PF tek again.

You got this!!!:dogpipe:

It started smelling like banana bread for abit. Or maybe those were those others attempts i did with pf tek on perlite in a tote, not sure. Also the current state of colonization was altered when I broke it up with a potato masher to try and gain for depth with the colonization process because I figured it was taking to long.

Please tell me that you threw the tub away already. That is not going to grow cubes, dude. It's not. It's not doing you any good keeping that thing around, it's just a mold spore factory
