    #26981622 - 10/12/20 02:11 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I found this at my brother's house in the country (southern Illinois). I think it's a coprinus comatus, which I hear are good eats, but was hoping to get some help identifying first. Thanks!!!

Habitat:
found in newly rocked driveway (shaded) at house secluded in the woods

Gills:
black

Stem:
white and relatively skinny

Yes, I think that is corprinus comatus. In any case you certainly don't want to eat them in that state (too old). You want to get them when they're young and egg-shaped That one would turn into disgusting goo if cooked. You want to get them young and cook them straight away (after which you can freeze or refrigerate them). I actually made toast with them for dinner tonight:

No, it's not. It's something more like Coprinopsis picacea

Oh yeah ... a Google search shows that one looks way more likely. Ignore my post! I thought it was just a really old crappy one. Excuse me.

thanks for that--I think you nailed it. some stuff I read said the Coprinopsis picacea is often confused with the coprinus comatus, so I felt a little a better about my misidentification...lol. again, many thanks!!!
