Cricket pitch south East UK
    #26979861 - 10/11/20 11:25 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hi friends!

I found these on a South East UK cricket pitch, having been told that was a good place to look today (11 October). There were thousands, growing in groups in the grass of the recreation ground. most of them were small. you can see the features better on the few I picked up to photograph.

Any idea what they are?

Thanks!

Thanks buddy, weather was nice so went out with my prime lens to get some good pictures... just a shame that the subject isn't as interesting as I'd hoped!

Do you think it's a good location for psychedelic mushrooms? Or when one species is growing in such large quantities, is it unlikely to find a patch of liberty caps?

Also, why are cricket pitches and bowling greens so good for mushrooms generally? I walked over a horse common and didn't see one, at the recreation ground, especially around the cricket pitch, I saw thousands!

What kind of areas should I be looking? Hills? Grasslands with animals on them? Forests? I always see hundreds of mushrooms in forests but none of them look familiar to me (I generally keep my eyes open for liberty caps and wavy caps) or is it largely blind luck?

I have to say, as much as I like the feeling of shrooms, I think the search with camera awakens my inner hunter/gatherer... Would just be so satisfying to find some!

Thanks again

It looks like a place liberty caps would grow, golf courses are great too. Usually when there's loads of another species growing the libs seem to be in their own patches rather than mixed in with other species but you can certainly find them growing right next to other species too.

I'm not sure why cricket greens and bowling greens seem to have more mushrooms growing, maybe its because we can see them better in the short grass so we think there's more than in other places.
Anywhere wild with grass grazing animals like sheep/cow/goat fields or areas with rabbit population, hills and grassy mountains are good places to check too.

I'd recommend watching some videos about I it to get an idea of where you should be looking

I've looked in a rabbit wasteland with short grass, a horse field, a wood mulch adventure playground, a forest, and the only two places I've found mushrooms in large quantities are the recreation ground where the cricket and bowls pitch are, and another rec ground with a basketball net. I guess I'll go back and look closer... It's good exercise at least and a fun excuse to get my camera out! Are forests pretty much pointless in the south UK?

Sometimes no matter how good a place looks, they just might not be there. They are more rare to find in forests but if you live near one its worth a check! (check along side the paths that people use for horse riding)
