What kind of temps and times do you dehydrator owners use when drying out Psilocybe Semilanceata Liberty Caps for storage ? Should I go low and slow or just a hot fast blast ?
Thanks ,
Jim

I'm in the middle of my first grow now, so I don't know all the ins & outs YET... but I did just purchase a dehydrator thinking this would be my drying method when the time comes. Then I read up on it...turns out cool air drying is the preferred method. This is because the alkaloids that we want to preserve are actually heat sensitive, meaning they will degrade and become ineffective compounds. Therefore you might consider doing what I'm planning at this point, which is to disconnect the heating element in the dehydrator making it a cool air, fan-type dehydrator instead. Or, if your dehydrator has a "no heat" setting, just use that. If not, & you can't disconnect the heater, then maybe the lowest heat setting wouldn't be too terrible.

Sorry but this is bad advice and not true.
Air harms the active compounds, heat does not. So quick is better. You know people make mushroom tea, right? With boiling water.
My dehydrator doesn't have a heat setting or thermometer, but I think people usually go for around 160F.

Oh hell, now I'm confused again!
From what I gathered in my reading, I thought I came to the understanding that it is both heat and oxygen that contribute to the degradation of the psilocin alkaloid... But yeah, you are right Forrester not only do people make tea, but some folks also extract a crystallized form of psylocybin using alcohol and a double boiler type setup...this obviously exposes the mushrooms to high temps and from what I hear the alkaloids do not lose their efficacy AT ALL when prepared in this way.
All I know for sure is that I am not a fan of the confilicting information I'm seeing on this. Now I'm wondering if I should go back to my original plan of using the intact dehydrator, heat & all! At least the rapid drying from using the heat would help prevent any post-harvest mold contamination from taking hold.

You can set your you dehydrator to highest heat setting and run it till they are cracker dry. The stems are drying out fast obviously, what you have to check for is the nipple area / where the stem meets the cap which is the meatiest part of liberty caps. If that is cracker dry then they are ready. I check the thickest/biggest fruits and if they seem to be cracker dry I'll give it another 30min for good measure, especially if the dehydrator is stuffed with fruits.
Total time will depend on load and heat output of your dehydrator but I would do a first check after 2 hours and then babysit till dry. You will have it down after a couple of dehydrator sessions.
Final tip: If you are new to dehydrating then check your fruits after a couple of days in the jar and make sure they are still cracker dry. If no dry them a bit more.

You can throw shrooms on a pizza into a 420 degree oven for 15 minutes and finish with a broil and still get high.
You can tempura batter and deep fry shrooms in hot oil.
You can boil shrooms
A dehydrator if anything locks in potency by denaturing enzymes and removing moisture faster than fan drying
Crystals from alcohol extraction has been bullshit for decades

You should definitely, for sure, absolutely do that
Pretty much everyone on here uses a dehydrator as is, if they have one. It's the most sensible method for sure, and no loss is taken.
Post harvest mold contamination is only an issue if you're doing something silly like air-drying them Or something even stupider like putting them in boxes with damp-rid or whatever they call that desiccant crap.

Is it possible to over dehydtrate ?
The Liberty caps are pretty small thin fruits so they seem very dry now ,but I might give them another 6 hours at 130F/55C just to be doubly sure?

Not really, but it shouldn't be that hard to tell cracker dry. Snap.
