Unsure about stage and optimal conditions (coir)
    #26980077 - 10/11/20 02:05 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

This is what it looks like now, the casing layer is a mixture of coco coir and vermiculite, maybe 5 mm thick, just a little bit moist, almost dry. I haven't misted but once for fear of getting green mold. Strangely I'm hardly seeing any knots here, or mycelium for that matter, but pins growing out of the sides. Which stage is this and what would be the optimal conditions?

This is a box made based on a TEK from another forum with Tyvek, which is about the same size of both sides. I'm wondering though whether this provides enough FAE with the lid closed. On the other hand, I'll get less contaminants that way... Not sure where to go from here.

Casing layers should be moist. It's their job. I'm assuming you late cased that or you just kept it so dry that the myc said no thanks. Being made of verm and coir, the myc generally would consume it if it had been applied before pins started to form and was damp.

I don't have enough info to say for sure but it look like you have a fully colonized and fruiting sub with an entirely too dry top layer. The pins are probably coming up around the side because that's where they are finding the best climate.

Misting does NOT cause green mold.
