RGB having issues - continued from previous post
    #26967755 - 10/03/20 02:55 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I need to run something by you folk and hope you can help. I started my first RGB on August 7 and have posted some photos in a few earlier post. I followed all the steps and everything looked like things were going great and even a little faster than I had hoped or expected. When it came Tim Elton add the casing, I got mixed up on the instructions and ended up breaking up the compost/myc cake. Then I added the casing anyway, hoping it would come back around. Much to my surprise, it did!!! And with what seemed like a thousand pins. That was about a week ago. I noticed that things stalled whole I gained a shitload of fuzzy feet all over. I read a couple posts that were saying that others with stalled pins weren’t getting adequate air exchange so I decided to move the bag’s content into a tub. I put it in the middle of my ‘holy’ tub with some pearlite. Then I carefully cut down the corners of the bag all the way to the bottom so the bag could fall away. I’ve now got the tub in a back bedroom where our cats won’t mess with it and I can keep the temps down lower than the rest of the house. While doing all this, I had the bag out in natural light and saw that some of the colors I saw now have me concerned that things have gone south a bit too far. Do me a solid and look over the photos and let me know what you all think.

Nice pinset. The first ....and only time i cases i made a little sandwich. Case on bottom, crumbled spawn then another layer case. Creating a “cake”.Looking back i think you crumble spawn and case then a small layer of case over that. Any way great pinset especially for a bag birth.
The small darker heads are lack of rh and fresh air. The fuzzy feet are from lack of fresh air. Its all about high rh and fresh air to move across the mush skin for transpiration. Higher temps will dry them out like that too.

Wow so many pins!  It looks like many of them have dried out and aborted.  I thinks you need more humidity in there.

If you're gonna use that like a SGFC, you should hydrate the crap outta that perlite and raise the tub up so air can pass thru it.  And mist the shit out of that block, some of those pins still look alive...maybe...

I used rosin tech press screens 45 micron for filters instead of polyfil. Keeping in mind average bacteria is .2 microns i coomonly spray these filters with water . Works great. Just gotta keep the rh up. You could try thiining out your polyfil a little or add a few more i have 6 2x5 inch holes in mine but i like to case for even pinset and extra contam protection and extra humidity buffer

So how much does temp have to do with my problem? The room the tub is in is a fairly consistent 72-77 degrees. I have two options if I need to lower the temp. I can move it to a basement room where the temp is 68-72 or move it to my insulated garage where the temps this time of year is around 55-65 and natural daylight is available in both locations.

Also, I don’t know what SGFC is - please define.

Thanks for the speedy responses!!!

Temp isn’t the issue, bad conditions are. You need double the perlite, elevate the chamber, use a pencil to ensure the bottom holes are not clogged, rake up the perlite with your fingers to ensure it’s not settled, rehydrate if needed.

It's a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber, I had assumed you knew since you made one.  That tub does have holes in the bottom as well, yes?  And a lid, with holes as well, that you'll wanna leave on?

Use the search function for proper SGFC design and do what Pasty and I said and you'll be good to go

Here’s where I am now. Ignore the junk in the room - it’s my wife’s ’closet’ which is really our back bedroom. It wasn’t until I took the photo of the tub did I realize I actually put too much pearlite. I can take some out if necessary.

What should I do about the pins that have the odd coloration and/or the dark caps? They probably done, right? Also, should I be concerned about the areas that are actually blue or green shades? That’s trich isn’t and a kiss of death right?

No such thing as too much perlite IMO, just don’t let it settle. But I prefer 5” of perlite myself.

The aborted ones will just turn back into mycelium, and I don't see any trich just bruising.

So a week later and things are really taking off. Here’s two shots from this morning. One with my index finger for a rough size reference.

oh and I’ll be adding a dub tub on top tonight. I’m gonna need it!!

I’ve heard that those can be harvested and that they’re just as potent or more so then a grown shroom - any truth to this? If so, I’ll pull them out now.

BTW, thanks for all the speedy responses!!!

Yeah you can definitely harvest the aborts and use them.  You usually wanna do so before they sit on the block for too long though.
