Using Pastywhytes method issue.
    #26977699 - 10/09/20 10:03 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So guys I'm new to the hobby and decided to give agar a try before just going spore syringe to grain. Figured Pastywhytes would be a good first TEK to give a try. Did everything I believe correctly as far as the tek goes, but where my issues began was my 23 quart presto requires 3quarts of water no matter what goes in the pressure canner. So the 8 little cups covered in foil were floating in the water. I had enough extra jar lids and a trivet inside to help lower the water level, but the cups were still floating. So it kind of slipped my mind, and I proceeded on with the pressure cooking. Half of my little cups came out full of water. Where exactly did I go wrong at?

The cups are so light that I believe just about any amount of water coming up the sides of the cup would make them float. Should I get a stand of some type, and have the cups sitting completely out of the water?

Any other suggestions?
Many Thanks.

I don't know what kind of "cups" you are using but if you can fit them inside of a large wide mouth mason jar you should put them inside of one and close the lid almost completely. That should keep them out of the water.

:whathesaid:

But also, why do you need 3 qts of water?  If you use the quarters taped to the rocker weight trick, you can get away with much less water

That info is here BOD’s pressure cooker thread

and even if pasty plates don’t fit all the way into a qt jar, I’m pretty sure the bottoms will at least fit into the tops of wide mouth pints or 1/2 pints and they could sit in there above the water and you could maybe stack a couple high.. probably more stable if the whole bottom was all pints or 1/2 pints if you’re going to stack em

Faht
