No, there would be no cognitive dissonance. I can hold conflicting ideas in my head and not have problems. Truth is, I was being rather facetious -- my principal action, without regret, would be to destroy the ballot. There would be no conflict.

I personally do not feel, as so many apparently do, that morality is subjective. I think there is an objective component, and it is based on a principle of compassion.

I think the truth is that we all really know what the proper moral course is in any given situation. The human mind is geared for that. So the problem is not in finding a better definition of morality, but rather how to find a way to get people to stop disregarding their consciences in doing the wrong thing.

Hmm, well I think we can establish objective points. Being kind to someone objectively results in more kindness and less unkindness... even if only the kindness given though I'm sure tests would reveal there was an additional effect.

But there are all kinds of "tests" and they are not all mutually inclusive.

The shopping cart test is fairly black and white but the ballot issue is more gray. Another person who is not a terrible person might think that extra ballot being cast is for the greater good.

In this case, there might still be black and white since there is a common sense wrong in forgery. Perhaps it is simply a matter of the golden rule and such logic makes it wrong. There does not need to be some other inherently deep reason for being wrong. It would seem there is still room for subjectivity, but the idea of morality suggests the most utopic of possible communities through the simple act of not infringing on the liberty of others.

There are grey areas, abortion, a fair price. The idea of consent is introduced.

Are practical jokes moral?

I fully agree that there are gray areas, and morality is no simple thing. One thing I would add with the ballot example is the legal principle: it is a felony to forge a ballot. Now, that introduces the whole concept of buying into the collective and the common good, in the faith that if as many people obey the law as possible, the most moral, or at least most harmonious, action will be the result.

But then this introduces the concept of the law and legal deterrence and citizen responsibility and all that, and that's a black hole. Just look at how many millions of lawyers we apparently need to employ on that avenue, and how little consensus there seems to be.

I am continuously a forgery of myself, it would be immoral to deny it, maybe that helps?

Where is the standard for morality outside of a rationally consistent metaphysic?

I'd argue it's an impossibility.

by "a rationally consistent metaphysic", do you mean a process of classification and generalization that works?
