Thoughts on big cities for the future
    #26977392 - 10/09/20 05:50 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, all, just wanted to see what people's thoughts were on the future of cities, both in the US and abroad

are they done? are people coming back, and if so, why? if not, why not?

i am in the NYC area and it's been a very stange time, so this is my frame of reference for the question

hope you are all safe

:sunny:

No they are not done. It doesn't make sense for people to live away from the cities unless they are farmers or live off the land. I keep hearing that people are moving out of my city area which is San Francisco and Oakland, but those are mostly tech workers and it's making it possible for the local people to buy houses again. Eventually the tech workers will have to go back to work and they will have to move back to the cities. Then housing prices will go way way up and I will be very happy about that.

I love the city!

hi Lophosaurus, i don't think they are done either, almost everything gets re-purposed in some way

what specifically i wonder about, is if office space is no longer really a commodity, and technology has connected us so nearly thoroughly and in real time, what do cities become when the core of their existence, which is direct immediate human interactions and business, moves away?

i'm pretty sure SF is equivalently expensive and heavily professionally office based. in NYC, many wealthy people left, granted they can come back anytime, but what if they don't need to and don't?
