    #26977368 - 10/09/20 05:29 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hi everyone. I was doing some yard work when I came across a little cluster of possible fun-guys.

Location : North Ga mountains US
Found on rotted underground root (old cut tree, cant tell what type).
The area was well shaded.
No bruise, or coloring.
Very light scent, No off putting, or strong smell
The stem is hollow.

I'm Hoping it's active.

100% not active. No idea what it is though.

Gymnopus species, probably G. dryophilus.

I can see maybe thinking that from just the middle picture, but I think it’s the same cluster just under a different lighting, and flipped over.
The other two pictures are certainly not Lacrymaria.

Hey OP, are all three photos the same cluster of mushrooms?

Yeah, I see Lacrymaria. Only other thing that popped into my head was Armillaria tabescens but ruled that out pretty quick based on margin and gill attachment. Never seen Gymnopus in these thick AF chunky clusters.

I don’t think they are very big mushrooms, at all. I think the lack of any scale is playing tricks. Also I see Gymnopus species fruiting in pretty massive groupings all over the place, often with some in clumps, and others in ones and twos, there are clumps of Gymnopus popping up in my garden now, although most were basically pinheads still this afternoon.

The thing is, the shanks are very easy to snap open, no tough fibrous.

Yes they are definitely a Gymnopus species then, I am 100% confident, in that ID. I am honestly a bit flabbergasted at the suggestion of Lacrymaria. Although I will say that there are a particularly lot of ID requests for Lacrymaria that originate from Georgia. So a level confirmation bias can be excused.
I am not at all surprised by a very junior member chiming in, in agreement with a TI, who has offered a suggestion, contradictory to one made by a user who doesn’t appear to have much experience on the community.

How about lyophyllum decastes? Fits a whole lot better in my opinion.

No that's Psathyrella sect. Homophron due to the brownish red spores on the cap. Lyophyllum has white spores as does Gymnopus.

Geez Louise.

My apologies. I’m not trying to suck up to anybody. I was just stating that I agreed and that I didn’t see any trait that lit the bulb for Gymnopus. I guess I’ve only ever personally observed G. peronatus, but I know it well.
Take a look at Lacrymaria velutina. Coloring, stature, veil remnants around the margin. That’s why I agreed.

I assume you were talking about me... Haha.

I didn’t spot those spores, good eye.
But Lyophyllum descates has a white spore print and decent sized mushrooms, these are mushrooms are mature but tiny,

not anywhere close to the size they would be.
Homophron spadeceum seems a good fit.

Apologies I didn’t mean to imply that you were sucking up, I meant more that people in general are prone to missing contrary evidence, to an idea put forward by an authoritative voice. So I could see how you would look at those pictures and think oh yeah that probably is right. We all want to be on the winning side regardless of how low the stakes might be.
