Agar transfer
    #26975793 - 10/08/20 04:45 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I'm just curious... Say I have a 90x15mm colonized agar dish. How many transfers could I do from that one dish? I know agar transfers can be infinite but I'm wondering how many dishes I could end up with one run

I think the general rule for anything to do with transfers is 1:10. You can go over that but it will be slower and more prone to failure. You can also do less then 10 and get quicker results. With just agar to agar, you only really need a grain of rice sized cut and some patients to start a new plate.

Depends how small you want to make your transfer pieces.  Assuming they're about 5mmx5mm, I believe you'd get 254 transfers if my math is right, but that does seem like a lot.  I figure the area of that plate is 6361.7mm^2 divided by 25mm^2 for each 5mmx5mm piece gives us 254.4.

Errr... reading the other reply maybe I didn't understand the question...  Do you mean if you had one plate, how many plates could you inoculate directly from that based on the amount of colonized agar?  Or do you mean going from that plate to another, letting that colonize, then going to another, etc?

That's what I got as well when I did the math. It does seem like a lot
