Obviously not in prime condition but Im really hungry and don't have much money for food, plus I have a friend who really wants to try chicken of the woods, the ends are kinda dry but the middle still looks fresh and meaty. Think they're still salvageable? I'll post more pics in a little.

As long as it doesn't smell rotten it should be fine, definately probably not going to taste as good as it could but its up to you.

You don't want to eat mushrooms with mold or bacterial infections. Some may be harmless to humans, but some can make your tummy very angry. I'm pretty sure i see mold all over these - plus they are past prime anyway.

I eat COTW pretty regularly during season. Off eucalyptus a lot here in SoCal. I have found success in cooking very thorough. I actually slice and bake for 30min and then prepare how I would normally.
The other trick is to only eat the freshest specimens. The older they are the worse they taste, the texture isn’t good, but most importantly as folks have said, there is the big risk of mold or bacteria on the mushroom.
If there is any dark discoloration or bruised spots I cut them off. If there are a lot of damaged areas I just pass. It’s not worth potentially harming yourself.
After you have had a fresh, properly prepared COTW you won’t want it any other way trust me ✌️🍄💗

The ones I showed where the worst of the bunch I went through my bag and found a few that looked not as bad so I cut off everything that didn't look good and the top skin and only ate the middle tasted like a normal laetiporus just really dry not surprisingly. I would normally pass on these also but with little food I took the risk, we have some rain in the forecast this week so I'm going to throw out the rest and not give my friend any cause I don't want to risk getting her sick(especially not on her first wild mushroom experience.)
