I have a good selection at my local feed and seed store for grains, is that grain ok or would that have fungicide on it? I asked the attendant but they really wasn't sure.

Its probably ok. Fungicide only prevents spores from germinating. Mycelium can still grow though I think. Make sure you rinse it very thoroughly. RR has a great grain prep tek on his lets grow mushrooms website

What grains do they have? Some people have trouble with the preparation on oats and hate them. There might be an easier/better grain to start with.

All the oats I've been working took over two months to colonize from Agar; look and smell fine at spawn run. They trich out right at pinning. I think I'm getting bacteria with the super long colonization then when put into open air they fail. Im testing variables right now, I'll know a little more this week. Switching up the source and noc method. So far I hate oats and if you want a few hundred pounds for free you can have them. Im gonna run a small test batch to see if ifs prep technique. But I don't think so. Mine was a local source, I'll try again with a corporate brand. Too many variables to tell right now. But I hate them!!!!

They have all types of bird seed millet is the one I was considering. It's $23.00 for 50 lbs. I've been using the deer corn. What is a good suggestion? I think they have the also.

You'll find someone that hates every type of grain based on their bad experiences. Also you'll find people who have success with any kind of grain based on their good experiences.
Lots of people don't like corn. It's definitely not the best choice, but even corn works

I got 50 pound bags of millet for $12.99 and I love millet for the abundance of inoculation points it provides and the white trash easy prep if you go with the no soak no simmer technique I like to use. Talk about streamlined.

This is what my issue is with oats. Agar take forever. I can take my own spore print and make a syringe out of it and in 2 weeks have almost fully colonized grain.

If spores work well on your oats but your agar is taking a long time to colonize it. There's nothing up with the oats and there is something up with your cultures

Millet is great if you can get the prep down. Wish I could help with that, it's been too long for me, gonna have to re-figure it out myself when I start growing again soon.

In answer to the same question elsewhere I just posted this in another thread:

I was stuck in the hills without wifi when this got cereally rolling (i think). Got a link to the best thread on it? I'm curious.
I got the idea/process from Southwest mushrooms on YouTube, his process was the most simple I have ever seen and he grow thousands of pounds a month. It got taken down unfortunately for some reason, so it wasn't available for me to go back and reference when I was trying to remember his exact water ratios, but I remembered his process other than his ratio. So I took to the shroomery to find someones water to millet ratios for bags and adapted it to the process I had seen the Southwest mushrooms guy do. I found a couple different write-ups here. While not as simple (I skip a good amount of what he does) this was the closest thing I could find on the shroomery.
I will probably do a write up soon because I am in love with how white trash easy this shit is.
Decide what you want your final bag weight to be, calculate what 30% of that weight is and that is your moisture content for bags. Weigh your grain, and weigh your water so it's the exact same every time, put them in the bag and PC.
I don't soak, rinse, simmer, do that dry rinse step that guy I linked to does, or anything... Get your calculations right for moisture to grain ratios and PC them bitches.
Done.
