Will using too much spore liquid ruin the process?
    #26974883 - 10/08/20 03:24 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

(Posted for a friend who does not want to publicize her hobbies)

(PF tek) She loaded her jars with vermiculite/brown rice flour/water substrate to the rim, added the dry vermiculite on top, sterilized the jars using a crockpot for 120min, and as soon as the jars cooled she used a spore syringe in the jars top 4 holes.

Problem is, apparently the substrate was jamming the needle and clogging it up, so she had to push the plunger with a lot of force - which naturally means less precision control over the amount of liquid injected when it finally breaks the jam and squirts out.

She isn't sure, but thinks she put way more than 1/4cc per hole. Probably more like 1/2-1cc per hole.

Any feedback I could give her would be appreciated.

Is it normal for substrate to jam the needle? If not, what did she do wrong? Will extra spore liquid ruin the possibility of cultivation?

Not 100% of the time, but you're adding moisture which has various detrimental effects. From the sounds of things, it's not a big deal and I'd wager most do that heavy handed squirt in their first go round.

In other words: It's fine: it happens to a lot of girls, just be more gentle next time.

But it's def not normal for the mix to jam the needle though... Do you have any pics that would help clarify?

And I went Unhhh.

Yeah I’m wondering about why it was jamming up your needle too. Were you going straight down into the cake itself? The holes should be near the edge of the lid and then you put the needle tip between the cake and the glass.

Maybe that was the issue. The holes were around the edge of the lid, and the syringe was inserted diagonally so that the tip would end up between substrate and glass. But to get there the needle would have to pass through moist substrate, so that must be it.

One of the jars had a white looking growth on the bottom after 1 day, which is suspicious because PF tek says its supposed to take 2-4 weeks.

Shoot a bit out of the syringe onto the bottom/side of your SAB to break the clog, then try innoculating. Should be easier to get individual drops.

Aim for the glass, good way to monitor Mycelial growth.  I have put 2cc per jar in my brf cakes with no issues.
