How long can sterilized jars of rye last?

I did a grain spawn run the other day, but accidentally made too much and came out with a couple extra jars. How long will sterilized jar rye berries be good for before I decide whenever it is to inoculate them?

If they're completely sterilized, they would be good forever, if you kept them closed. But since there's probably some contamination in there, I'll guess three months before it starts getting rotten.

They're still closed, I never opened the extra ones. Why do you think there is probably some contamination in there?

The air pockets in the grain make it tricky to fully sterilize. A pc cycle will give you a window to inoculate during which the mycelium will have the upper hand over bacteria. There is more info in this thread there is quite a bit of bickering in it, but some gems of solid info sprinkled throughout. A few TCs put in their 2 cents in there

I've had month-old oat jars work out just fine.

maybe even longer but I use one piece lids without FAE and tighten them down untill used. However, I don't recommend it. Best to use fresh.

canned food lasts years if closed properly ...idk why it should be different if the jar is grain instead of tomatoes

Sterilizing liquids and things submerged in liquids is a whole different thing than sterilizing grain with air pockets everywhere. This is why sterilizing agar takes relatively no time at all, its liquid.
I would really like to see a proper experiment done. I think I may do one soon, just to see it with my own eyes, and to finally put it conclusively to rest.

Theoretically sterilized grains in a hermetically sealed environment should last for a very long time (years).
The real issue is there are some potential vectors such as filters, improper sealing, etc. to consider and there is really no way to know if your jars or bags are thoroughly sterilized. Some endospores can survive very harsh environments and bloom later.
Liquids definitely have an advantage with sterilization, hence the shorter time to make LC solutions and agar vs grains.
I have learned many lessons the hard way with this. Use the grains as soon as possible. You a generally giving the myc a head start and not necessarily a clean start.

I can't speak on exactly how long they will last, but to be safe, you could always PC them again before use.

Ime don't sweat it but inoculate them as soon as you can. I have waited weeks a few times when life got in the way. Right now I'm realy sick and got some jars that are 48 hours old . Not gunna sweat it. I never noticed big losses because I didn't inoculate right away . Big losses usualy come from shitty technique or not using clean cultures to start with in my experience.

Its best practice to use fresh. I've left jars for 2+ months that look like I just made them and used but don't perform as well yield wise. Probably a little bacterial. Fresh is best!

I just made them this past weekend, so they’re only several days old, 4 or 5 days I believe. I have a MS syringe that I’m thinking about using that I have left over from a long time ago before I started agar. I was just seeing if it’s still possible that it can be used as grain spawn?
