Slow colonization of substrate
    #26973674 - 10/07/20 11:45 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I'm 2 weeks into a grow, using an unmodified 54 qt sterilite. B+ MSS to WBS to field capacity Coir.

Everything looks good, no contams as far as I can tell. I spawned my 100% colonized WBS 2 weeks ago but colonization of the substrate is going really slow and I'm just making sure everything is OK.

The top of the coir is colonizing but looking in from the sides into the substrate I see very little growth. Coir depth is around 4 to 5 inches. I've seen pictures of people 2 to 3 weeks in with full colonization ready to fruit so I'm a little concerned with mine. I initially had the sterilite sealed for colonization (it's the gasket sterilite) but I unlatched it last night to see if maybe GE is the issue.

It took 3.5 weeks to fully colonized six 1 qt WBS jars, which seems a little slow to me from what I gather from others, so maybe it's just got slow genetics?

Patience is a virtue and I'm ok with waiting for these bad boys, just wanted input from those with more experience.

Do you have pics of the spawn you used? Did you throw all 6 quarts into that tub? Should be further along than that. Something ain't right.

Unfortunately, no photos. The jars colonized really slowly as well. There were definitely no contams that I could see, when I opened them to spawn they smelled like pure mushrooms.

The room I'm growing in has shitty AC so temperature can swing between low 80s and mid 70s but that shouldn't be an issue as far as I can tell.

I don't see any ventilation openings.  Also, why is there so much condensation?  I'd take the lid off for a couple of days.  It may also be that you made the substrate too wet.  For field capacity, squeeze very hard.  There should only be a few drops or so come out.

Spore syringes often have bacteria in them, which causes slow growth and sometimes unfinished colonization of spawn depending on the severity. And when you spawn those bacterial grains they will sometimes just fluff up a bit in the sub but never actually jump off and colonize. It can be hard to tell sometimes with bacterial spawn.

That may be what happened here, or the tub being sealed or both. Even with slower cultures 2 weeks is about the max for full colonization ime but that’s with a 1:2 spawn ratio.

I’d just make sure the lid is lifted at least a little somewhere and wait and see what happens

My understanding was that GE wasn't so much of an issue during colonization. I have flipped the lid just now (following bods unmodified tub tek)to allow for more GE/FAE.

I followed Bods coir tek, squeezed pretty hard and only a drop of water fell from my hand; I felt pretty confident about field capacity... then again this is my first time.

Got it, thank you.

I flipped the lid to allow for more air to get in, hopefully that will help. If not, back to square one I guess!
