Jason9086, any pics of those mushrooms? I’m trying to get some P.cy myc going right now but spores from last season are just sitting on the agar and not germinating 🤔

Well mushroms still havent changed their look... only one ore two a week but those stones are getting HUGE!...About the size of a baseball now
Im about 90% sure their not cyan now and tending to think they might be ALT#7 As I did recently grow these but I’ve never seen that species grow on wood

Anyways I recently got three syringes of cyan spores from a trusted cultivator so I’m in the process of redoing Agar And already have some measurable growth in three days

Hi 99.99 this is very interesting. i have noticed sclerotia forming in species that have not been reported as sclerotia formers (P. subbalteatus). But, I am wondering if you are looking at an "abort". Some mushrooms form weird aborts that develop way beyond the pin stage. Some are even named after the aborts that they tend to produce (see Entoloma abortivum). It would be interesting to peek inside one of those nuggets to see the structure.

Yeah I haven’t thought about cutting one in half and looking at it
I’ll think about doing that in the next day or so

99.9, Please post a pic if you do open one up, it would be interesting to see. It's been a while since I've spent any time thinking about sclerotia, but if memory serves, it seems like they follow a similar developmental pathway to fruitbodies but diverge at or just before the pinhead initiation phase. I think that sclerotia have a distinctive outer rind (I could be mistaken here) and that if it is an aborted fruitbody (like that seen with Entoloma abortivum) you may see some wonky fruitbody-like anatomical structures inside the lump (like partially developed gills).

I picked the largest one today in the top left corner it was like a fruit connected onto the Alderwood chips felt like a mushroom picking it the smell is very earthy and it is very solid but it also has a hole in the middle of it which I have not seen with other types of sclerotia

I have planted that stone in coir/Vermiculite mix that I normally grow ALT#7 in
Ill put it in my grow room and see what happens.... i’ve done this before with stones and they have produced fruit

Hi 99.9, thank you for sharing those pics, how cool! They look like sclerotia to me, even with the cavern in the middle, which I'm sure I have seen with P. tampanensis in the distant past. Also, as you probably know, sclerotia are dense mycelial aggregates. Judging by both the weight of the "stones" and the fact that they produce fruit, it seems pretty likely that you are looking at sclerotia. A microscopic look at the stones might help to clarify this, though.

Also, those fruitbodies do not look like P. cyanescens to me, of course, fruitbody morphology can vary wildly depending on environmental conditions. Do you have access to a microscope? It would be interesting to see if you could get a positive ID on the basidiocarps.

I think what I’m going to do is just try and grow out the stone that I picked and see what becomes of it
I don’t have access to a microscope so growing the stone out will probably be my best hope of finding out if they grow differently inside like ALT#7

Bad news today people what I thought was cyan was actually ALT#7
I know this because the truffle I harvested grew out ALT#7 fruit and the master culture I thought was cyan also grew out ALT# truffles

Good news is I have already started my second attempt of my cyan grow

So this may be a good of a place as any to bring this up but I had a 4lb bag of cyanescens wood chips and it sat on my shelf for quite a while maybe a month and I slacked on doing anything with it. I’ve grown cinctulus before and seen it’s stones and what is in this cyanescens bag looks just like them. I broke one with my nail in one of the pictures you can see it. So decide for yourself. There all blue and very small but nonetheless look exactally like stones

Oh wow thats cool,Maybe a pin can be thought of as a stone until it turns into a mushroom?
Would you able to taste it to see if it tasted like a truffle ?
The biggest thing that gave mine away to be in a stone producer was I actually tasted the stone that was in the agar dish and it was definitely from ALT#7....Which I cannot stand the taste of they make me quite nauseous

I was surprised you didn’t smell it but I guess if you just dumped it into the wood, the wood smell might have over powered it. I’m also surprised the alt colonized the wood what was your sub? Amazing they did so well on wood.

I already broke down the bag to a mini mono and cased it.

I used wheat berries for my substraight, I kind of think that is all they are growing on as theirs an area in the wood chips it hasn’t colonized yet
It never produced very much fruit either but lots of truffles....Nothing compared to my indoor grow though

The smell of the wood did overpower the smell of the mushrooms

The mycelium never grew past what it is in this photo
