11psi Pressure cooker. Cook times for grain jars?
    #26972861 - 10/06/20 08:03 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone have any idea how much extra time I should add for cooking up grain jars in a 11psi PC instead of the normal 15psi ones???

If I'm cooking longer should I make my grains more wet?

Plan on using smaller half quart jars instead of quart as well, so its not as dense inside the jar.

Thoughts?

Wow that is above and beyond perfect!
Thanks so much!

210min is long AF should I adjust the grain wetness if I'm gonna cook them that long?

Is this chart accurate? Looks like I've been over cooking my oats by about 45 minutes.

Why would a trusted cultivator post a untrust worthy chart? 😮

1. @11 psi you can get away with 2 hours yes its a long time and out side usa/Canada no body gives shit about canning food at home and its a rare to find pressure cooker at 15 psi imo.

2. follow the tek and never over hydrate grains, you do not want that always make sure grain are dry when putting in jars and add bit extra water to pressure cooker for 2 hour cycle

3. never try to sterilize 1 liter jars or pop corn at 11 psi.

11 psi it works.

Thanks bro!

Yeah its hard to find a 15psi PC. A mate had a 11 I could borrow for free.

OK ill stick to the hydration/drying methods in Foo mans tek

And stick to the small jar idea.

Cheers

I wasn't questioning whether or not the chart is untrustworthy. I want to know how accurate it is. How many tests were done to verify those numbers? The original thread that was posted by Willsolvem when he made this chart doesn't have much discussion and doesn't appear that anybody else tested the theory. The great majority of people here are all about minimizing workload and time and if this chart is accurate, why aren't all grain jar teks written to say "20psi @ 20m"? Some of them even say 15-17psi @ 90m.

[Quote]Bodihasatta said:

Yeah that's a healthy way to look at things for sure.

I use Foo mans WBS tek, he recommends 15psi @ 45min.
Ive seen everything from 45-90min recommend for jars on here.

I don't think many people would have a 20psi PC though lol
I cant even find a 15 in my country haha

I just read a bunch of shit about cooking jars in microwaves and boiling them, also some lady saying to just chuck water in them and let it ferment then drain the water and add mushy stems. Brrrooo as a noob my head is spinning sometimes!

Im gonna try 150min at 11 psi and see how I go.

P.s

I thought boiling something in water for 15 minutes kills all contams?
Like in the wild if you boil any water for 15 minutes you can drink it.

Ive always wondered if you filled a jar with grain and water then boiled it for 15-30min then drained out the water from the lid hole then put a filter on it quickly, would'nt that kill all the contams in the jar? You could put the jar upside down in a SAB and let the water drain for 30 mins before adding a filter, just like you do with draining your grains before you PC them?

Maybe ill try it with one jar as a experiment

No that wont work. Grain flour only needs around 30-45 minutes at 15 psi. Grains longer. 15 minutes is for liquids and tools.

1. boiling something for 15 minutes it kills yes and no. some bacteria dies in 15 minutes some in 30 but then there is special snow flakes of bacteria that does not die boiling alone, it can remain dormant till conditions are normal and it grows out. in case of grains there are wide range of bacteria and all we do is retard there growth by adding nitrates or just simply raising temperature to point where bacteria is damage to point of no recovery, for info read on endospore,

2. steam at 15 psi produces temperature some where between 121c/249f and at that temperature bacteria either dies or go in to dormant state, science and shit.

3. steam at 11 psi produces temperature of 115c/239f to make up for lower temperature we cook for extra time, same goes for agar 30 to 40 minutes at 11 psi instead of 20 minutes at 15 psi

4. so if you put grain and water together and let it boil for 15 to 20 minutes bacteria takes around 8 to 9 days to wake up and is usually bacillus bacteria the first one to come out of dormancy along with trich in 10 days sorry i did this but didnt knew shroomery at time and now i settle for 11 psi@ two hours

about these charts and temperature read it on google

most of these experiments with endospores and 15 psi came from medical laborites and its very accurate to point its a standard to autoclave agar @ 15 psi 121c/249f for sterilization and you can find these charts from labs and mostly are on internet

cleaning laboratory stuff @ 17 psi( some still use 15 psi) or using dry heat oven. with grains its a different story in labs it takes 20 minutes for 1 liter jars to be sterilize with confirm death of bacteria and endospores in 20 minutes and autoclaves are very accurate with pressure and heat,
but at home with pressure cooker its not a very accurate the pressure goes up and down and given the size of jars its only be on safe side most tek recommend using 60, 90 minutes @ 15.
big size pressure cooker takes time to build pressure and then we start the timer once it reaches to max temperature and that heat is not consistent and we have to wait 60 to 90 minutes to make sure internal core of jar is raise to 121/249f. but autoclaves hit that pressure in few minutes and 20 psi yes it takes only 20 minutes but imo there is no way to find a 20 psi pressure cooker easily. plus its still going to take 45 minutes 25 minutes to build up pressure and 20 minutes to sterilize

Thanks dude. That makes a lot of sense

PCed some grain for 3hrs @11psi last night, see how it goes

I had 50% of 20 half quart jars fully colonize at 11psi for 90min before, so hopefully doubling the time helps me get towards 100%

I just hope the longer PC time doesn't dry out the grain to much

it does not dry out i was afraid grains will dry out but in the end i just trust the tek and follow it the result is amazing coir and horse poo i got two shoe box and small tray going all made using 11 psi

horse poo coir pasteurize in oven for 60 minutes lol it works i love bods bucket tek sadly can not use it since poo and coir i get in my country is contam with trich next best thing use oven bags for pasteurizing

Yep I follow Foo mans WBS tek to the letter

How long did you PC for? What size jars?

Cheers

two 500 ml jars and two 320ml jars @ 11 psi for 2 hours and
i follow Frank's WBS Prep, dude does the traditional sunflower seed removal and adds 3 cups of coffee for nitrates. i shook jars twice and full colonization in 18 days with no sign of contam.

Is soaking grains to active bad spores to make them easier to kill in the PC or is it to add moisture?

Foo mans wbs is a no soak tek

the whole process of soak is to add moisture plus activate endospores, but honestly i came to conclusion soak process adds more problems than it solves it adds more endospores and then boil to kill them and pc to kill them again, all these tek with no soak imo are on the right path after this batch i am moving to foo mans group, it takes less time to prep and plus no germination of spores means less to kill and boil adds same amount of moisture that is added by 24 hours soak.
