Species of mushrooms
    #26972888 - 10/06/20 08:31 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I have long wondered what makes a species of mushroom distinct. After collecting and cultivating many different phenotypes of p. Ovoid. I have began to question where the line is drawn. I have crossed various genetics from different parts of the world to make new varieties similar to how cultivators do with cubensis. It has got me wondering if different species of woodlovers that are closely related genetically can be hybridized, and would the outcome be considered a distinct  species? It is frustrating to me that the laws are such a way to prevent professional research into these mushrooms which leaves us, the hippies, stoners, and foragers of the shroomery to make the groundbreaking discoveries in the field of Mycology. Would love to hear some opinions on the subject from those who have been doing this much longer than I.
Some of my ideas on what makes a species distinct to others:
DNA
Physical traits
Spore color and shape
Substrate
Habitat
Season
Psilocybin content

Please let me know what you are thinking, I am going to make a write up of all the different variations of p ovoid that grow in this area as well as the distinctvariationsI have createdthrough cultivation, I think they may actually be multiple different species that can interbreed similar to how a horse and donkey can make a mule.

It's a little bit of all of those.

Morphology (spore color and shape, microscopic features, physical traits)
Physiology (presence of certain metabolic pathways, .e.g ability to produce psilocybin)
Molecular genetics which use DNA analysis for taxonomic purposes
DNA/RNA sequencing is used as well to compare known fragments common to a whole group.

For example:

Check the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fungus for some overview though.
