Fast (ish) knotting/pinning in my PE shoebox: Luck, genetics, contam?
    #26972851 - 10/06/20 07:54 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hello, shroomerites. I have a Penis Envy shoebox that has already started to pin, at just about 2 weeks after spawning. Like exactly 2 weeks, maybe 1 day more or less

The first image is zoomed in on my first tiny pin

This is my 2nd grow, and my first using a clone culture. My MS PE grow took LIFE (like 3-5 weeks) before they even started to knot. 2 weeks is perhaps not miraculously fast, but I have a couple of mini-monos and a 66-qt tub that I spawned just a few days after this shoebox and they aren't progressing nearly as fast

These are my two mini-monos (12 qt boxes) for comparison. Spawned just 3-4 days after shoebox, but at this rate I don't expect to see pins on these in just a few days

The only thing I can think of that I did differently from any of the other tubs/shoeboxes I have made is that I did not cook the coir at all. This shoebox was meant to be an experiment to see how my coir would perform straight out of the bag (it's prehydrated/loose coir). I just added a bit of cold water since it was under FC. I mixed it with some verm, which I also did not heat up at all, just brought it to FC

The ratio is 1:2 spawn to sub, plus like 1/3 to 1/2 a quart of coir-verm top layer. Then I sprayed the top layer about 10 times w/ tap water

For my mini-monos and my regular mono I used roughly the exact same ratios, except that instead of using hydrated bag coir I used EcoEarth bricks + verm using Bod's insulated cooler tek

Apart from the difference in substrate, it could be a genetic thing. For my shoebox I used a single quart jar of spawn. For my mini-monos I used 2 mycoquarts, and for my mono I used 4. All of my quart jars were noced w/ small agar wedges, which could mean a narrower set of genetics. Mixing two spawn jars could mean that my mini-monos have a mix of genetics while my shoebox, with only 1 jar, is more uniform

This is all me just guessing. I hope it's not a sign of contamination, the spawn jar was not totally immaculate, but it looked pretty good to me. It could just be luck as well. I don't know, I'm still too newbish to say

I'd like to have an idea of what the reason might be because, obviously, I'd like to replicate these conditions and have faster fruiting if possible

Any thoughts?
